What is the furthest distance you've walked with your dogs ? Did they enjoy it or did they hate you afterwards ?

I can't answer my own question as I haven't walked dog for twenty years but I frequently see all sorts of pooches at the local country parks, clearly having a whale of a time and likely covering more ground than their owners. And getting wetter/dirtier/smellie too. Pooch pictures welcome.

Should say 'a dog' and 'smellier' .

Last week we walked the Dogalicious 10 miles along a beach.

She has 4 inch legs. And she loved it. She could have gone again.

I was knackered.

Sunlov · 21/04/2019 21:31

I used to run 2 miles and bring my pooch with me. After the first mile she would pull on the lead to go home at the roundabout, but we kept running.

We walk our dog twice a day, usually 4-6k each time. The most we have done in one walk was 10k and he loves it...unless it's raining!!

stucknoue · 21/04/2019 21:36

20+ miles, we did 20, he was off lead so goodness only knows. He (and we) were sore the next day. Regularly he is walked 10+ miles

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 21/04/2019 21:51

Dog is walked a minimum of 3.5 miles each day, almost entirely off lead. I say 3.5 miles, but that's how far I cover - he goes several times further in the pursuit of interesting smells, other dogs, squirrels and swimming.

No idea how far our furthest walk has been, but physically he will literally keep going and going, like the Duracell bunny - if you're still walking so is he. Mentally he can get a bit over tired when he's seen a very large number of other dogs over several hours. At that point he'll let you know he's well and truly had enough by growling at any dog who comes too close. It's a bit like having a toddler that needs an afternoon nap after spending all day at soft play, and has a tantrum to prove it.

He never hates me for the exercise - quite the opposite.

He's a small dog, legs no longer than 6". I sometimes get comments from strangers about how he can't need much exercise as he's so little / it must be boring having a little dog because they can't walk far. I give a hollow laugh.

RedRiverHog · 21/04/2019 22:04

I got very lost once so my dogs and I were out in mostly woodland for 7 hours. Dog1 was rather tired at the end, dog2 was still bouncing around.

CommunistLegoBloc · 21/04/2019 22:05

I walked mine about 8 miles once, a few months after we first got him. I thought it could be our regular route. He was fucking furious. Didn’t trust the sight of his lead for ages.

I would like a dog keen on distance walking.

goose1964 · 21/04/2019 22:07

My gran had a collie German shepherd cross and we regularly did 15 to 20 miles with her, even a short walk would be 5 miled

Brigante9 · 21/04/2019 22:09

About 10 miles. I asked for a gentle walk on the flat, we ended up scrambling up waterfalls (‘It wasn’t a waterfall last week” ‘Yes, well, it’s rained since then!’), wading through bogs. It was a typical walk for my cousin who does this daily. Me and the dog were knackered, especially as he was trying to run after sheep (obviously not allowed) and he went swimming in the tarns along the way. He was covered in ticks the following day. Ugh. He would happily have gone again the next day, I was aching!

DramaAlpaca · 21/04/2019 22:14

DH takes our two spaniels for long walks a few times a week. Dog1 is kept on lead as otherwise she'd be three fields away, so does whatever DH does. Dog2 is obedient & good off lead, so he runs about like a mad thing & must do three times the distance the others do. He could easily do more, it's impossible to tire him out.

MrsGarethSouthgate · 21/04/2019 22:34

Love the thought of @CommunistLegoBloc's dog being 'fucking furious' 😁

Squeezle · 21/04/2019 22:40

The last dog was more than happy to do 15 miles or so, day after day.
Current dog (same breed) would walk happily for the same distance, but wouldn't want to walk the next day.

Stiffasaboard · 21/04/2019 22:45

I have a terrier who will happily come on 15 mile very hilly walks with us (on lead as he’s a monkey and will peg it after any small furry thing and never be seen again).
He does tend to sleep well afterwards

He will also run with me- has done 12 miles but was shattered so i usually only take him for around six at easy pace.

This bank holiday he’s done 32 miles over three days and is happily trotting around the house now winding the kids up by stealing socks.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/04/2019 22:47

Probably 11km.

Today he'll get 6km run plus another maybe 5km walk.

When I run 10, he must do 15 because he's all over the shop. But he'll rest on the sofa after. Happy though.

Pippioddstocking · 21/04/2019 22:52

Mine ultra runs with me so furthest in a day prob 35 miles but he was off lead . Did the same the following day and he still asked for a walk both evenings , not at all worn out . He's a high energy breed though and I chose him for this purpose .

CherryPavlova · 21/04/2019 22:57

He does a ten mile run daily. Then about another four or five miles walking each day too.
We have him run bedside a bicycle along French riverside paths and country roads. He’ll happily do twenty miles at a fast trot with a break halfway for a drink. He’d do more, if he could. He never seems to be too tired to refuse a walk or run.

Bleubelle · 21/04/2019 23:06

Last week we walked the Dogalicious

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who calls my dog Dogalicious ☺️

I run between 5 and 10k most days and my lab runs with me. He sleeps for an hour when we come home and then is ready to go again. He’s done the West Highland Way twice and has bagged 67 Munros. DH runs too so the dog is often out running twice off lead in a day.

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2019 00:22

I call ours Dogalicious too. I'm only admitting that because two other posters have now been brave enough to Grin

IndigoSpritz · 22/04/2019 13:13

I always imagine the long-legged dogs like GSPs and Great Danes being the ones to benefit the most from multiple mile hikes. Whenever I see such dogs they don't keep still for long and seem to have boundless energy and enthusiasm.
