Receptive language disorder in an older child

DS aged 10 has recently been diagnosed with receptive language disorder. According to the very experienced SaLT who saw him, he has bee. masking for years. We only became aware there may be a problem this year when he just couldn't follow any comprehension style questions when he was tested in class. He's now in year 5 and he's had serious issues with school all year. The school want to apply for an EHCP. Prior to this he was often in the extra support classes they had with TAs, but otherwise seemed alright. But the SALT thinks he just covered it well. Confused I'm really not sure where to go with this. I've read about it and it seems its a lifelong condition with fairly serious implications in terms of how he will always find communication difficult. I feel awful I didn't notice before, we originally thought it was dyslexia so didn't make the connection to speech. It's taken a long time to get to this point and the school weren't much help. Has anyone had a similar experience? What can I do to help my son.

I would ask the school to get a cognitive assessment via the educational psychologist. This will give a better understanding of the areas your child may struggle with.

They've said that will be done when the ehcp application goes in, which I hope will happen in the next few weeks. He doesn't seem to remember things well. For example, he really struggles with the times tables. So we've been working on those. The school would test him on one group, once he passed he would then move on. So as far they were concerned he knew them. But he didn't because he couldn't retain this information.
