Summer holiday

Does anyone ever leave booking their summer holiday until the very last minute (ie a couple of days or so before they go)?
We haven’t booked anything yet, the kids and I will be off school anyway, dp will block out the time from work. We have a couple of events and things during the summer so we aren’t 100% sure on when we will be able to go so it’s a case of potentially not going anywhere or leaving it very late!
Dp is self employed and can take whenever he needs off so that’s not an issue.
BIL and his family often do this but I always think it’s risky and what if nothing nice looking comes up!
So does anyone else ever do it? Has it worked out?
We have nothing to lose really so I’m just posting in hopeful anticipation that people have managed to still have a holiday when booking very last minute :)

Sorry, no. My anxiety would take over if I tried to do this.

Plus I love the looking forward to the holiday so I book as far in advance as possible.

I am sure you will find somewhere lovely though and probably get a good bargain.

Ahh no anxiety here! Although I do think I will feel a bit stressed about it Grin
I think I’m just a bit worried that there will be no holidays left Blush

No we normally book in advance by a few months. Infact we have just booked flights yesterday for the summer - mid August - and that feels very late for us.

I ave booked a pretty last minute holiday - was about 10 days in advance - for a winter sun break once as we decided to go away last minute as the uk weather was getting us down. But there were no real deals to be hand - certainly wasn't any cheaper for flights or hotels in our experience!

I do wonder if the old days of bargain holidays have lefts maybe if not stuck to school holidays it's better??

Yeah. We booked a fabulous get away with Eurocamp only two weeks before we left one year. Did it near the end of the holidays so got a great deal.

We have often booked less than a month ahead. However usually shorthaul and not always flying. It depends where and when you plan to go, and how specific your requirements are.

We did pre-DC. Got 2weeks on an unusual Greek island for £500 for two- in the summer holidays as we both teach. Booked on Tuesday, flew out on Friday.

It was good as an adventure, we’d never been to Greece, it definitely wasn’t the more usual Kos or Crete, we were somewhere used by Greek people for breaks from the mainland. We joined in and embraced eating at 11pm, being joined by random small children etc.

However, it was- perhaps- not somewhere I’d have chosen if I’d done some research! The journey wasn’t at all straightforward- plane, coach, ferry- and the hotel was basic (clean, hygienic, fine) and it was too hot to move for several hours each day.

We do normally book in advance for all of our holidays but as I say, this year it’s just not possible for a few reasons and we won’t know if we’ll actually be able to go until a week or so before the dates we’ve got in mind. So it’s either book last minute or just not go.
We do want to fly although no preference on short or long haul.
Ideally a flight and then a drive without the faff of lots of different types of transport, it’s just easier with 3dc!
As for getting a bargain, it would be nice but I don’t think that really exists anymore, BIL said he doesn’t notice a difference in booking last minute to when they book in advance so I’ve got no expectations on that front.
