This is totally gross, isn't it?

DH just ate some ham which had a use by date of 7th April. That wouldn't be so bad in itself, except that he took it out of the bin and ate it. It was in the bin because I found it in a cupboard where it had accidently ended up between two packets of wraps, so it hadn't even been in the fridge since I bought it at the end of March. There was visible mould on one slice.

He ate half, then put the rest back in the fridge in case the DC wanted some for lunch. (It is now in the outside bin).

He doesn't see anything wrong with it. I think all parts of that are utterly grim.

I'm right, aren't I?

He's a scientist? Maybe he was doing a practical experiment?Wink

Seriously though... what is up with him?!Shock Keep the toilet free later..

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 20/04/2019 16:20

If this is true....

I hope you've got lots of bog roll .

Also stick a bucket next to the loo as he will need both ends covered so to speak

Lovemusic33 · 20/04/2019 16:25

Watching this thread to see what happens 🤣 we need regular updates on his bowel movements. Maybe it is a scientific experiment? My dd pinches food out the fridge (she has ASD) and has eaten out of date food with not the slightest sign of food poisoning.

Violetroselily · 20/04/2019 16:27

That is utterly foul

Did it not stink?

SarahTancredi · 20/04/2019 16:28

Place marking for Update.

Hes gonna be sick

diddl · 20/04/2019 16:29

"and has eaten out of date food with not the slightest sign of food poisoning."

It's not so much the out of date though as that it had been kept in a cupboard & looked grey!

GummyGoddess · 20/04/2019 16:30

I'm more concerned that he would have fed it to the children if you weren't there!

SluggishSnail · 20/04/2019 16:34

I think he is batshit.

I have no idea what the ham smelled like - it was unopened the first time I binned it and carefully wrapped in a ZipLock bag the second time.

No obvious signs of illness, at the moment he's happily filleting a salmon he bought half price at Tesco and marinading some (not out of date) meat for the BBQ.

We have more than one toilet.

That really is grim. What on Earth possessed him? The texture ... the smell... the taste ... it makes me feel queasy just thinking about it🤢 and surely the fact that it wasn’t even refrigerated makes it a proper health hazard?!

magicstar1 · 20/04/2019 16:36

I had a similar thread on here when DH took some out of date sausages out of the bin and cooked them. Everyone said he’d be sick, but he was fine...I don’t know how!
As yours wasn’t cooked I’d be surprised if he’s not vomiting by tonight 🤢

SluggishSnail · 20/04/2019 16:37

I'm more concerned that he would have fed it to the children if you weren't there!

The DC are teens so I'd like to think they would have looked at it and chosen something else. That said, he could have put it in a sandwich or an omelette. I'm pretty sure none of them actually had any of it though.

@magicstar1

I can't help thinking it's no coincidence that it's only the DHs that do this sort of thing!

Hopefully the children inherit your common sense!

Missingstreetlife · 20/04/2019 16:59

My partner has science degree but can't understand that the oven is hotter at the top, or that heating on downstairs will end up on bedroom ceiling if you don't shut the door. House ends up like a sauna.
Whether he is ill depends on what bacteria have got into the pack with the ham. V risky. It must have smelled bad.

Cantthinkofausername1990 · 20/04/2019 17:05

Following to see what the outcome is 😀

BishopBrennansArse · 20/04/2019 17:10

Let us know when the raging gripping stomach pain and the shits start, OP.

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/04/2019 17:48

It won't be shits. Youd vomit pretty much straight away. If you managed to ingest the putrid festering vile stuff in the first place. No

FiremanKing · 20/04/2019 17:52

Is your husband a Labrador?
They’re prone to that kind of behaviour.

ALannisterInDebt · 20/04/2019 17:56

Does DH have an unhealthy relationship with food?

NeutralJanet · 20/04/2019 17:56

Was the packet not all swollen up with gas? That's what happened to a pack of beefburgers that had fallen out of the bag in the boot, I found them a week later and it had swelled up like a balloon. And no, I did not eat them.

safariboot · 20/04/2019 18:56

Vom.

But there's more than the gross factor here. Why does your DH not trust your judgement? Why does he see something you've thrown away, and not accept it's in the bin for a reason like any normal person would? No, he insists he knows better.

Passthecherrycoke · 20/04/2019 18:57

Your H sounds utterly mad

InMyBloodstainedSundaysBest · 20/04/2019 19:03

The only way I can see this being in any way possible is if it was air dried/cured style ham, not the wet cooked ham stuff.

SluggishSnail · 20/04/2019 19:50

It was Tesco Finest thick cut, the sort where you get about 4 slices. Not sure if that helps.

Safari you have a good point. We definitely have different thresholds about when to throw stuff out, but eating something out of the bin is a new low. In his defence (vaguely, as this is clearly indefensible), he didn't know about the accidental cupboard storage until afterwards. But it was still 3 weeks out of date and I would still have chucked it if I'd found it in the fridge.

He still seems fine, cooking a BBQ and drinking wine...….

Fireman

No, not a Labrador. That would be cuter :)
