Just browsing on my Facebook page before bed and this pic popped up on rate my plate... it's so disgusting and my feet itch but I can't stop looking at it. Bleurgh!!! Why do I find the holes so disgusting? It's just pasta or crumpets or flower heads. What is it about them that's so vicerally gross?

I mean, the idea of a mac and cheese pork loaf is very weird and unappealing, but after reading the BBC article and some previous MN threads on trypophobia... I wonder if I have trypophilia! Is that a thing? All the trigger photos I see people mention - lotus pods, crumpets, that breast picture, even the gross food picture here - I find utterly fascinating, and would really want to reach out and touch the thing and just stare at them for ages...

SparkleJoy · 26/04/2019 22:06

I had always felt sick by these sorts of images and didn't realise until my adult years that it was a phobia. I often have nightmares if I do see one 🤢

7Days · 26/04/2019 22:11

I think it's a parasite or borrowing insect type fear.

Perfick · 26/04/2019 22:13

I don't have trypophobia , but that photo is horrible! I wouldn't be impressed if someone dished that up for my tea!

WhatNowRandy · 26/04/2019 22:22

The BBC thing said that it's supposedly a normal reaction (of which 15% will have a more than normal reaction reaching to phobia) and natural to be repulsed by this stuff. I've been image googling trypophobia pictures, and even the obviously photoshopped ones showing hole patterns on skin just make me want to give that skin a good old squish! Blush Maybe I should spend more time in Sporners' Corner?

makingtime · 26/04/2019 23:06

Urghhh 🤮🤮 I'm definitely trypophobic. It causes an intense physical response in me looking at these pictures (legs hurt, nausea, heart rate increases, a need to breath really deeply) but I can't stop myself from looking. Why is that?!

toffee1000 · 26/04/2019 23:07

Yeah I think that Dr Cole bloke is a bit of an idiot. He also said it was a bit like autism in that everyone has it, it’s just the question of to what degree. NO NO NO NOT EVERYONE HAS AUTISM FUCK OFF!

I had to put my hand over my screen to load the post then quick scrolled down.

My brother sent my the worst ever pic of 'tryiphobia' I won't even describe it as the image stayed with me for weeks and I don't even want anyone to search for it. Anyway that pic gave me the phobia.

I read an article that's it's evolutionary and it's because it reminds us of disease so we are repulsed by it and don't go near it.

Apparently it's not recognised as a real phobia but I can tell you it is Blush

origamiunicorn · 26/04/2019 23:20

but I can't stop myself from looking. Why is that?!

Yes exactly that. Physically repulsed but need to keep looking...which is why I can't look. I get an overwhelming urge to destroy the thing that has the holes, like stamp on it and squash it until the holes are gone (I know that sounds odd) I'm the same with the seed clusters in a bell pepper too or large swarms of insects (usually bees) on something.

AngeloMysterioso · 26/04/2019 23:29

I don’t have trypophobia but I do remember seeing a sped up video of a lotus pod flowering (is that the right word) which made me feel a bit sick. It looked like maggots emerging from... something.

Gertie75 · 26/04/2019 23:58

I think I'm a trypophile if there's such a thing, I love holes, they give me a funny feeling and I want to get tweezers and have a good rummage around in them.

Eve · 27/04/2019 00:04

Oh I just want to squeeze those - hard core Sporner that I am!

AngeloMysterioso · 27/04/2019 00:20

I must admit I do love seeing the little holes left behind in my nose (and occasionally my legs) after I’ve squeezed a blackhead or blocked hair follicle.

HairHereThere · 27/04/2019 01:34

I’m the opposite with these things. They make me feel oddly relaxed almost as if I’m in a trance I actually really enjoy looking at them
