Do you eat meat on Good Friday?

I’m not a Christian but was brought up going to Sunday school etc with my grandparents. Neither of my parents are religious at all either but we were brought up that you don’t eat meat on Good Friday. Every year I have this battle with myself! It’s irrational I know and my teen DS has been laughing when I suggested we have fish today saying ‘but you don’t even believe in God!’ He’s right I know but it’s almost become a weird superstition to me now. I’m not even superstitious! Maybe just odd? Grin

We had fish in parsley sauce today. In memory of my dgm and her lovely Good Friday lunches!! Not religious but loved my dgm!! And our lunch was truly delicious!

HelenaJustina · 19/04/2019 18:47

No, but I am religious!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/04/2019 18:48

Yes and I’m not religious.

Yes. Not in the slightest bit religious. Do whatever floats your boat.

isabellerossignol · 19/04/2019 18:49

I was brought up in a very religious family and I've never heard of not eating meat on Good Friday. Although the church I was raised in was very much opposed to rituals of any variety!

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/04/2019 18:50

As it happens we haven't done, but we don't avoid it deliberately. Did two loads of washing today too.

iVampire · 19/04/2019 18:50

Generally fish on Fridays. All of them

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 19/04/2019 18:51

Is this a thing? I've been christened, been to church a couple of times as a kid and knew it was traditional to have a fish supper on good Friday but i didn't know youre not supposed to eat meat?

I had chicken bacon sandwiches for lunch today, they were great

Muddlingalongalone · 19/04/2019 18:51

No apart from the year I totally forgot & had a bacon sandwich for breakfast.
No a churchgoer but brought up not to eat meat on GF and it's stuck with me.

WoogleCone · 19/04/2019 18:51

I didn't know it was a thing, but I'm not religious. And I just ate beef chilli.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/04/2019 18:52

Didn't the church change it's mind about meat on Fridays? At some point. If they can't make up their minds, I've no idea why anyone else would pay attention.

Do you avoid shellfish and mixed fibres as well?

ShabbyAbby · 19/04/2019 18:52

I haven't today and it wasn't even intentional. I've been grazing all day but not cooked a proper meal at all. If I had I'd have thought of something fish-y though. Out of tradition not religion though.

beachyhead · 19/04/2019 18:52

I'm about to have a BBQ so yes Smile

DramaAlpaca · 19/04/2019 18:53

Yes, much to the horror of my very religious Catholic late MIL.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 19/04/2019 18:53

expletive what's the deal with washing??

Semi (Blush) religious and no meat in our house today

ShabbyAbby · 19/04/2019 18:53

I've always thought it's "fish for Fridays" anyway. Easter or not

Iggity · 19/04/2019 18:53

Lentil soup for lunch and veggie pizza for dinner - DC and I observed it but DH didn’t. I thought it was supposed to be a day of fast with one light non-meat meal, as for Ash Wednesday.

Mapril · 19/04/2019 18:53

I was brought up with bland white fish and grey peas for school dinner followed by the same again for supper, not just GF but every bloody Friday until I moved out.

Today started with a bacon sandwich and will finish with a chicken curry Smile

TattiePants · 19/04/2019 18:54

Yes, although I haven't had any meat today so far. We are having take away pizza tonight so likely to have meat.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 19/04/2019 18:54

We've had homemade cheese and tomato pizza. :)

SileneOliveira · 19/04/2019 18:54

Have never heard of this. Is it a Catholic thing? Or an English/Anglican thing?

We've just had chicken.

TheHumanSatsuma · 19/04/2019 18:54

Steak on the barbie!

iklboo · 19/04/2019 18:55

Yes. We're not remotely religious. I'm sure it's one of the reasons DH married me. His mum used to make him eat finan haddock poached in milk for about an hour & boiled potatoes when he was younger. She's not religious either but said it was 'tradition'.

lanbro · 19/04/2019 18:55

Dc have just had Fish Fingers but I'll be having a carbonara later, not religious in the slightest

Fatted · 19/04/2019 18:57

Well I've had a bacon butty today and turkey for my tea so I'm off to hell.
