Housesitting - cat missing leaving kittens

kittendilema · 19/04/2019 11:23

Have name changed as outing.

DD1 is house/pet sitting. Cat went out yesterday evening and not come back yet. She has young kittens (not weaned) who are now getting hungry. DD1 has to work today. Should she 1) leave window open hoping cat will return or 2) take the kittens to the vets to be fed and looked after? If vets - who should pay DD1 or the owner?

How old are the kittens?

Has she tried contacting the owner to ask what they would do!

SimonJT · 19/04/2019 11:29

Why has she let an unneutered cat outside that has a litter of kittens to feed?

So now we have the cat pregnant yet again and kittens who need supplementing with formula.

Pluginwall · 19/04/2019 11:30

She should ring the vet for advice.

How old are kittens? You can get the powder from shops etc so wouldn't need to go to the vets. As for paying for stuff - Was she supposed to let the cat out? If not then she should pay for everything. If she was then not her fault and the owner should pay.

Costacoffeeplease · 19/04/2019 11:32

The kittens need feeding asap - how old are they?

Was she told to let the cat out? If so, it’s the owner’s responsibility, if not, it’s hers

Very irresponsible whoever’s decision it was

MerryMarigold · 19/04/2019 11:34

I would use a syringe to squirt some water into them ASAP as they can die more quickly from dehydration.

Costacoffeeplease · 19/04/2019 11:35

Bottle feeding kittens is not necessarily straightforward, especially if they’ve been used to mum cat, and not something for a beginner to do, I’d take them to a vet (I’m bottle feeding abandoned kittens at the moment, and have done so for many litters over the years), they will also need toileting

Costacoffeeplease · 19/04/2019 11:36

Do not ‘squirt some water into them with a syringe’ that’s the way to get it into their lungs, which can be fatal

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 11:38

Call the owner of the cat. Call the vet for advice. Do everything you can rather than being concerned over who should pay, because this is awful. She can't just leave them and hope the cat comes back either.

MerryMarigold · 19/04/2019 11:39

Well dribble it into their mouth s but they haven't had liquid for a long time...

kittendilema · 19/04/2019 12:09

Owner was allowing cat out prior to going away so assume she was ok with that. Kittens have been taken to vet as we thought that best course of action. Owner refusing to pay vet bill.

What did the owner tell your DD to do when she called them?

kittendilema · 19/04/2019 12:11

I didn't know you had to keep a cat in 3/4 weeks after giving birth. Especially one that is used to going outside ordinarily.

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 19/04/2019 12:13

What did the owner say?
Oh I hope the kittens and mummy cat are ok.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 19/04/2019 12:14

This sounds like a hugely irresponsible owner. Why would you refuse to pay the bill? Option b is the kittens might die!

JollyHolly30 · 19/04/2019 12:29

So she didn't actually ask if she was supposed to let the cat out, she just assumed it would be fine since she's seen it go out prior to having kittens?

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 12:32

You dumped the kittens at the vet Shock

Neolara · 19/04/2019 12:37

If the cat needed to stay inside, the owner really should have said. How on earth was your dd to know this otherwise? Owner is being an arse.

MrMeSeeks · 19/04/2019 12:41

Why would she let the cat outside?

notapizzaeater · 19/04/2019 12:42

Would the mummy cat insurance cover the kittens ?

What was your dd instructions ?

LynetteScavo · 19/04/2019 12:43

The owner is being massively unreasonable.

They should know the cat needs to be kept in, and should have told your DD.

So they just want the kittens to be left to possibly die if the cat doesn't return?

I really don't think your DD should pay the vets bill!

Reaah · 19/04/2019 12:44

Did you still leave a window open?
Mummy cat will be frantic

englishdictionary · 19/04/2019 12:44

Even if she thought it was ok to let the cat out, why did she leave it out overnight and only think about opening a window to let it in because she has work? Did it not occur to her at any point the kittens needed their mum back?

Shinesweetfreedom · 19/04/2019 12:48

Doubt owner has insurance if she can’t be bothered to get cat spayed to stop unwanted kittens.
Hopefully the vet will take the kittens off her hands if she won’t pay.

SoupDragon · 19/04/2019 13:03

This is entirely the owner's fault. If she didn't tell your DD not to let the cat out then how was she meant to know?

It sounds like the owner was letting the cat out anyway.
