Anyone use frozen fish?

If so,what do you think of it?
Do you have a favourite variety?
Any recipes?

Dd has decided to stop eating meat and I'm going to join her.
So we are going to do veggie 3 days and fish the others.
I think frozen would work out best value but I've never used it and am looking for some recommendations please

Yes. Buy in bulk from a fish guy. I just defrost in the freezer the night before and cook like normal fish.

I use the fish pie mix from frozen- in the bottom of the dish and then sauce and mash and cook for 20- 30 mins.

I just cook from frozen. Oven bag, bung fish in, cover in milk, sprinkle parsley on, tie bag up and bung in oven.

Any white fish does.

You can defrost fish in cold water in no time too.

Fish cooked with garlic, ginger, spring onions, a bit of chilli and soy sauce is pretty good. If you cook it from frozen then add julienne carrots and peppers halfway through to keep them slightly crunchy. Goes well with egg fried rice.

I’ve done this with cod, pollock and tuna and they all work well

If cooking fish pie mix from frozen, does it make your sauce more watery?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/04/2019 14:53

Raera not if you make your sauce fairly thick.

I use frozen cod for this, thawed out before I cook it. Love this recipe.

I'm not a fan of white fish, I like tuna steaks though. I put one out to defrost the night before and fry it with a little butter, black pepper and lemon.

Smoked frozen haddock, baked for 25 or so minutes in little tinfoil parcels with butter and wholegrain mustard. Served with new potatoes and steamed veg.

I have just made fish and chips, with Aldi, frozen, basa, and it was bloody delicious Grin

I also buy in bulk from a fish can that delivers monthly. I buy cod, sea bass, prawns and monkfish mostly. Defrost might before and cooks fresh. When ive run out I’ve used Iceland frozen cod and it’s really good. Only think I’m not keen on frozen is salmon can never seem to crisp the skin.

Rememberallball · 20/04/2019 21:45

I often use fish portions - frozen uncoated haddock and cod filets I poach in milk; fish pie mix (if I can get one without salmon as I don’t eat it) I use for pies or Fishcakes. Also use coated portions of plaice, haddock or cod and serve with veg or salad. I do buy fresh fish as well if I see it on offer. Places like Farm Foods or Iceland often have 3 picks for £10 type offers on so I stock up then and replace when necessary.

Frozen sea bass from Costco. Thawed then pan fried with spinach.

Angie169 · 21/04/2019 18:10

Pakora, any firm fish is good to do this with. The batter mix can be found in big supermarkets or Indian grocers, tho TBF I pakora loads of stuff so it may not to be everyone's taste

ShabbyAbby · 21/04/2019 18:30

Wrap in foil and bake in the oven
Use it in a fish pie
Poach it in parsley and milk
Cover it in cheese sauce

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/04/2019 19:11

I use smoked haddock in kedgeree, tastes just the same as fresh when you eat it.

Babdoc · 21/04/2019 20:16

Our Farmers Market only comes once a month, so I buy lots of big juicy steaks of coarse smoked salmon and freeze them. They thaw in the fridge and are delicious cold with dill seed and rye bread.
I freeze supermarket mixed packs of diced smoked haddock, salmon and cod, and use them to make fish and coconut curries.
If sea bass fillets are on offer, I freeze those too, then thaw them and bake with white wine, lemon and fresh bay leaves from the garden.
If I’m travelling to Holland, I buy packs of lovely rich fatty smoked Dutch eels at Schiphol airport and freeze them when I get home, to enjoy later.
Most fish will freeze well, including shellfish.

candlefloozy · 21/04/2019 20:17

Yes I buy frozen from supermarket. Ocado have a lovely recipe which uses fish and samphire and baby potatoes.
