The last time we were all well for an entire school holiday was October 2017 half term and we actually went abroad.

The children have 100% or near 100% attendance and I can’t remember the last sick day I had from work. No underlying health conditions.

Yet every single school holiday, one of the five of us is ill! Unrelated things too, hand foot and mouth, chest infections, tonsillitis, burst eardrums, sickness and diarrhoea etc.

Any other families get this? 😩

Me. Teacher. Ill EVERY holiday - theory is we work, work, work and soldier on, then as soon as it’s the holidays we relax enough to fall foul of whatever bugs are floating around.

Crunchymum · 19/04/2019 07:33

Mine are young (4 and 6) and yep we manage to have something every holiday. 6yo has been FT in preschool or school since he was 3y 2m admission error so we've had a fair few school holidays.

Most memorable was Easter before last when the oldest (then 4) was in hospital after an awful sickness bug, or that same summer when youngest got mild chicken pox, oldest got it and then last week of 6 week holidays youngest got it again - properly. We spent the whole holidays in the garden!! Barely saw anyone Shock

Current ailments are a cough (me) and on / off earache (4yo)

Mine get ill in term time too. Both had 100% autumn term but were out quite a bit from Jan - April as we've had everything going.

Interesting! I’m a childminder and pride myself in never having to parents down despite working with little ones and being exposed to all their germs. But the second my annual leave rolls around..... I’m ill.

I echo what Lilyboleyn said. Teachers often get ill right at the start of the holidays. Must happen to the kids too. Although in my case my dd, 2, is always ill in term time when it's the most inconvenient!

UCOforAC12 · 19/04/2019 08:15

@Crunchymum sorry to go off on a tangent but I'm curious about the admissions error?

WingBingo · 19/04/2019 08:18

We have a uk holiday in a cottage each year with the dc, one of them is always ill.

This Easter we have been blessed with scarlet fever, both dc getting it, one after the other.

Chartreuser · 19/04/2019 08:22

We had a running joke that every single holiday after having kids until the youngest was 5 we ended up in a&e. We should write hospital reviews up with bookish parks on trip advisor.

Like you entirely unrelated (suspected meningitis, quinsy, hand foot and mouth with dehydration etc).

I agree with the theory that we're so full in when not in holiday (DH and I worked full time so kids in nursery from 7-30 til 6) that during downtime as they relaxed the bugs could take hold. Entirely unscientific I'm sure!

For the past few years now DC's are older we have managed abroad many times without incident so they (and we) have grown out of it. Says a lot for the strain raising young kids places on us.

Hope you're all well soon so can enjoy what's left of the holiday.

My kids are older Grin and we’re still going through it

I hadn’t had any time off I’ll since starting a new teaching job last Easter. Then was sent home at lunchtime on the last day of term sick and spent the first 4 days of the holiday throwing up!

SuperNoodly · 19/04/2019 08:42

Not my DC or DH (touch wood)....but me!

I get sick almost every holiday (bar summer holidays - usually OK then). But I’m often ill at Christmas, and ALWAYS I’ll in Feb half term and at Easter.

I work in education.I think I pick up bugs but fight them of with adrenaline until term ends, then my immune system just decides that’s it, enough is enough. Currently just recovering from a 5 day big that had me flat out in bed. God it was dull.

Clutterbugsmum · 19/04/2019 08:45

Yep, I think it's because we so busy that when you actually stop your body relaxes and then you come down with something.

chocatoo · 19/04/2019 08:47

I was always frustrated when I worked in the corporate world that as soon as I had a holiday booked I would get a cold or whatever. Other friends that I worked with the same. We all used to comment on it and came to the conclusion that you become more susceptible when you relax...

NormHonal · 19/04/2019 08:48

I did this to my poor parents when I was a kid. Rarely had a day off school, but hit all the major illnesses (chickenpox, mumps, flu) during family holidays. Must’ve been miserable having to sit in a caravan with me whilst my Dad and Dsis had fun on the beach. Sorry Mum! Grin

abcriskringle · 19/04/2019 08:50

Another teacher here. Always ill in the holidays. Christmas was awful - norovirus until boxing day, then a nice bout of the flu and ended with a 48 hour migraine on the final weekend. Joy. These hols haven't been too bad - managed to escape with only a heavy cold but we shall see what the long weekend brings!

keepingbees · 19/04/2019 08:55

Yep. My DD has glue ear which seems to hold out during term time, then become infected and burst her ear drum at the beginning of every single school holiday!

Crunchymum · 19/04/2019 08:59

We got a preschool (nursery place) starting just 4 days after my DC1 turned 3. A few weeks later they offered all the part timers a full time place. This was just before the proper roll out of the free 30 hours.

He should have started full time the term after his 3rd birthday. Which would have been several months later. And we were never asked to fill in any official details (as you do now for the 30 hours!)

Sorry, wasn't as exciting as it sounded, DC1 just started full time a few months before he was meant to....

  • He loved preschool and settled in so well, which is why we went for the full time place.
TimeIhadaNameChange · 19/04/2019 09:03

As a student I was always ill every holiday. As others have said, it's a relaxation thing with me.

I now work with little ones and tend to catch everything they have. It's not fun. Most of the time I go in anyway - I reckon I've caught it from them so I'm not exposing them to anything they haven't already been exposed to.

fallaf · 19/04/2019 09:26

Time to start booking immensely stressful holidays then Grin

bluetongue · 19/04/2019 10:48

This is me! Barely ever sick while at work and have accumulated vast amounts of sick leave. Then, go away on a trip and Bam, I’m sick. I don’t usually do lie on a beach or by a pool holidays so I’m usually trying to ski, hike or move hotels every couple of days while ill. So annoying.
