Anything to help an itchy boy?

DS has chicken pox. He's only 2.

He has had the maximum dose of paracetamol and of Piriton. We've used a topical lotion. He can't sleep for the itching.

Is there anything more I can do for him?

Cool bath with bicarbonate of soda.

As it’s late make a bowl of it and dab on to relieve itching.

Derpess · 19/04/2019 02:17

Oatmeal bath if you've got any in?
Have you got poxclin? It's expensive but really good stuff. Might be worth getting some in the morning... chicken pox is horrible, especially when they're so little hope he gets some relief soon.

Virasoothe and poxcilin both utter wonder workers. Far and away better than any other treatments ime.

I remember giving dd cold wet face cloths to put on her itchy spots

Loopytiles · 19/04/2019 07:43

What topical lotion?

FaithInfinity · 19/04/2019 08:06

We used oat baths, DD had them all in her genitals and it was the only thing that helped.

Vinorosso74 · 19/04/2019 08:06

Poxclin is super soothing and very easy to apply. Soothes the itch immediately. I have used it myself as I had chicken pox the same time as DD.

Bluesheep8 · 19/04/2019 08:49

E45 itch relief cream. I have regular itching due to a neurological condition, meaning that it's the type of itch that can't be scratched to stop it (doesn't stop me trying, particularly in my sleep) but this cream really helps. Also, no not baths or showers and I recommend cotton gloves to stop skin damage from scratching whilst asleep

Apparently making a bubble bath using head and shoulders shampoo is meant to help. Saw an article the other week. It did clear my DS of acne on his shoulders so I think it may work.

EspressoPatronum · 19/04/2019 08:51

Apparently a bath with head and shoulders classic works wonders. Ds hasn't had the pox so I haven't had cause to try it though...

Just seen his age, scratch mittens for him then. I wear white cotton gloves in bed.

Thistledew · 19/04/2019 08:55

Thanks for the comments. We have been using oat baths, calamine lotion and Virasoothe (sorry, couldn't remember the name at 1am).

He has scratched the top off several of the blisters now. Is Savlon/Sudacreme the best option?

I'm a big fan of hydrocolloid plasters for healing broken skin - is there any reason not to try one on a couple of the bigger spots that have lost their tops? I wonder if it would help with the itchy drying out stage.

Also, as we now have some sunshine- does anyone know if exposing his skin for a short time to the sun would help or is it better to keep the spots covered?

Haggisfish · 19/04/2019 11:46

Sun is good-I think the uv possibly helps kill the virus and any bacteria that might be in the spots.

Derpess · 19/04/2019 11:47

The advice now is not to use calamine lotion as it dries everything out and can make itching worse.

Wonderbag · 19/04/2019 11:50

Calamine aqueous cream is great

Bluesheep8 · 19/04/2019 12:07

Sudocrem is very soothing and calming on broken skin. It has lavender in too so I even find the scent comforting
