If you wanted a beach to build sand castles on near Lyme Regis where would you go?

We have just moved to the area and have two ds, one 7 and one 4. We are getting up very early tomorrow and going to the beach, but where? We love Charmouth, but the sand isn't very good. Any ideas? We don't want any facilities particularly, just parking. Tia

We are driving from Ilminster area and don't particularly like Lyme Regis as it's so busy! But somewhere close by as both boys get car sick so long journeys are out 😬

Depends on how far you want to travel, I’d go east... West Bay even as far as Weymouth for a really good sandy beach. I don’t think you’ll be alone though, Lyme was packed today!

Argh, read all your comments! So, West Bay to the right of the harbour has sandy areas. Seatown is a bit like Charmouth I think, very gritty sand. Branscombe might be a good shout....

Exmouth (East Devon coast, near Exeter). Also Sidmouth.

West Bay as PP said.

No sand at Branscombe! Lovely but pebbly.

TBH I'd get up early and go to Weymouth. It has the best sand and it won't be busy if you hit the beach at breakfast time.

MrsFiddymont · 18/04/2019 18:52

Branscombe has pebbles, limited parking and like most places will be rammed. I'd go for Weymouth or Bournemouth, but sandy beaches and lots of parking options.

Lyme regis itself has a large sandy beach at the end of the stones, we have built many sandcastles there, a beautiful place to live

You could drive to Yeovil and get the train to Weymouth from Pen Mill. It would be a bit of an adventure and cut the car sickness?

I think large might be over-egging it a bit!! It fills up very quickly on touristy days. That said, I think it will be quiet tomorrow until 10ish.

Thanks for all your replies! Is Burton bradstock better?
I'll have a look and see how far West Bay is, and Sidmouth too!

Sidmouth has sand when the tide is out.

reefedsail · 18/04/2019 19:12

The only places with sandy-sand are places that have sections of imported sand. AFAIK that is only Lyme and Weymouth. I don't think West Bay has any golden sand- just some finer grit.

West Bay has a really great playground though!

Burton Bradstock is pebble/ grit.

megletthesecond · 18/04/2019 19:13

Sidmouth is mainly pebbles.
Exmouth is lovely.

Exmouth - huge sandy beach
