How long does it take to move to the top of a band in NHS

I've never worked for the NHS but have applied for a band 5 post which starts at under £25k.

How long does it take to get to the top of the pay band?

Is it subject to appraisal/ funds etc or does it just happen automatically?

Thanks.

As part of the new pay deal if you are appointed in the nhs or are rebanded after 1st April then you will still move through the incremental points but you will not get an actual incremental payrise until 2023.

So does that mean that you don't get a pay rise till 2023? 4 years later?!

How long would it take to get to the top of the band . My current job is very slightly over the top of the pay band but we can afford to take a drop of my salary for a few years but just wondered how long I would be able to get to the top so similar to my current salary.

Yes that's correct. For B5 there are only going to be four or five incremental points. Part of the pay deal was to delete a number of the points and taking a shorter time to get to the top of the band but there will not be an incremental pay rise for four years. You may get an annual COL rise but it won't be much more than 1%.

I started in the nhs in 2004, it took me 7 years to reach the top of band 5 (1 increment per year). I think that’s now changed and you move quicker reaching the top in 4 years.

Ok so from that website it looks like you start at the bottom of the pay band then after 2 years you're at some intermediate point then after another 2 years you're at the top.

Yes that’s my understanding too.
Progression through the bands is not automatic though and is dependent on you having completed a satisfactory PDR in the last 12 months and having no outstanding mandatory training or open disciplinary measures.
