Group gynae physio for prolapse

mamaslatts · 18/04/2019 15:46

I have been referred to physio for prolapse and had a letter saying first appointment was a 'group' appointment. It states you won't have to disclose intimate information but you sort of have just by being there.

I asked If I could have an appointment by myself but was told no, first appointment was always a group. I'm upset to be honest. Partly because I don't want to have a bloody group appointment about something so private, also someone always insists on bringing their bloody partner despite being told they are not supposed to and also I don't think there is any chance whatsoever if men had a problem with prolapsed balls or similar they would be expected to go to a bloody group to discuss it.

Has anyone been to one of these at all? Not sure whether to cancel at them moment.

No advice but that’s a bit shit.

I’d be fucked off, imagine bumping into someone you know there!

mamaslatts · 18/04/2019 15:55

God, I hadn't even thought of that! I just feel quite sensitive about the whole thing and it just seems like women get treated like cattle sometimes (and I work for the nhs).

That's terrible. I wouldn't feel comfortable going either. I would go though for fear of not being able to get another appointment in the near future. Angry

But surely the "someone you know" would be there for the same reason?

Sexnotgender · 18/04/2019 16:14

I’m sure you do, it’s not exactly something you want to share with the world.

Women definitely get treated like second class citizens. I was at the GP today for a second dose of antibiotics to clear a post partum uterus infection and I asked what happened if these didn’t work.

I got a noncommittal - I suppose I could refer you to gynae as you could have retained placenta. Like don’t put yourself out mate, I’ve only had this infection for four fucking weeks.

Sorry a little sensitive Sad

mamaslatts · 18/04/2019 16:14

Glad its not just me being precious. I'm forties so there will probably be younger women but it will probably be lots of women in their sixties. I know it probably shouldn't matter but I'm pretty gutted about the problem now I have to go and sit in room whilst some overly jolly person tells us all to squeeeeze.. (have been told to wear 'comfortable clothes')

Of course, and perhaps they don’t want everyone knowing their private medical information either.

londonloves · 18/04/2019 16:17

I was offered this and was so appalled and disappointed (after a long series of shit experience with NHS both pre and post birth) that I went private - very lucky to have help from my parents to pay for it.
Treatment of prolapse in the Uk is a fucking scandal.

mamaslatts · 18/04/2019 16:18

sittinonthatoilet - yes they will, doesn't mean they want to share it with me either!

sexnotgender - that's completely crap Sad

I think I will at least write to the PALs there and tell them what I think of the set up

mamaslatts · 18/04/2019 16:20

londonloves - are you SE or is this some country wide thing? Can I ask if the treatment you had helped? The female GP I saw was brilliant but it all seems so hit and miss when it comes to women's health

OP posts:
Sexnotgender · 18/04/2019 16:20

It is crap. Just want to enjoy being a mum rather than feeling atrocious all the time.

I’ll stop derailing your thread though.

Definitely raise with PALS. That’s so shit Sad I have pelvic problems and am in a FB group and we have all been treated like absolute shit by HCPs and the NHS, most by not being believed and being refused anything which might help. Good luck

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/04/2019 16:24

My dad had this after a bypass,he was very reluctant but said it was extremely helpful and was really very good. Seems to be a thing now. Not sure I'd like it for something so personal though.

londonloves · 18/04/2019 16:25

I'm in South east London.
Private treatment has helped quite a lot but I'm also very bad at doing the exercises. I'm only symptomatic now just before my period or if I overdo it carrying heavy stuff or walking loads. I think I made it worse by using a sling a lot.

FiremanKing · 18/04/2019 16:25

Sounds awful.

Imagine bumping into someone from the group when you’re out and they don’t immediately recognise you and you have to say, “It’s me, Deborah from the prolapse group!”

Ha ha ha. I think not.

FiremanKing · 18/04/2019 16:27

And you will always get one in the class who wants to be the centre of attention and dominate the group and of course her problems will be so much worse than everyone else’s.

She’ll but in and talk over everyone else and it will be awful.

mamaslatts · 18/04/2019 16:29

I wouldn't mind a group for something like high blood pressure personally but prolapse, no, too intimate.

Badger sorry to hear that. Seems like a pretty widespread problem, unfortunately.

Stiffasaboard · 18/04/2019 16:30

The NHs doesn’t have the resources to offer individual appointments to give out the initial information. Group sessions are a brilliant way of getting the same info to many people in one day.

Would you rather you waited an extra 12 months for an appointment or that it was deemed a non serious issue and not funded at all? (Given there is no threat to life this has happened to many other similar conditions and treatments)

Yes gold standard treatment would be wonderful but we dont pay gold standard taxes and there simply isn’t the money.

Be brave and go along and see it as sharing info with a group of women who are all in the same boat.

Try not to be embarrassed- it’s a common issue and you won’t be expected to describe how it affects you or get undressed etc.

And no one will be allowed to take their partner in.

RogueV · 18/04/2019 16:30

YANBU.

Sounds awful. Sad

mamaslatts · 18/04/2019 16:33

Firemanking I'm sort of assuming it will be more of a talk plus talking through of exercises (bad enough) but as I have pretty much fuck all information I'm not sure. The 'comfortable clothes' bit is particularly filling me with dread and now you've thrown loud Debbie into the mix its even worse.

OP posts:
Branleuse · 18/04/2019 16:35

i think thats really shit for a first appointment.

However, I think its massively unlikely that anyone is going to allow partners in the appointment, and if that did happen, I think they would not allow them to stay.

for what its worth, I am doing a group modified exercise class for similar gynae issues, and its absolutely fine. Its actually quite reassuring to know that youre not the only one, and that all sorts of women have the same thing and theyre ok.

PanamaPattie · 18/04/2019 16:36

Group sessions are not for everyone and every condition. Can we please stop saying the NHS has no resources when millions are wasted every year on pointless middle management making these awful policies.

Afonavon · 18/04/2019 16:37

It’s just a talk by a physio on the types of prolapse and incontinence issues. You sit in rows, watch a video and listening to the physio. When I went only women were there, and noone was asked to talk or chose to ask questions. This only happened once as an introduction, all following appointments were 1-1 with a specialist physio. Don’t worry at all.

mamaslatts · 18/04/2019 16:38

'stiffasaboard' there's many things funded by the NHS which poses no 'threat to life' but can severely affect your quality of life hence it being available on the NHS. As I said, many things I wouldn't mind group info for but for me personally this seems way too intimate. I don't really want to bond with other prolapsed women. I just want help with the problem. As for 'gold standard' treatment, don't think private appointment for a personal problem is too much to ask for. I'm not asking them to pay for eyelash extensions.
