Have you given up sugar? What happened?

I've recently given up sugar. Obviously not completely, I still eat fruit and sugar that's in normal 'healthy' foods. I mean, I've given up chocolate, biscuits, cake, sweets etc..
So if you've given up those too, what happened? Can I expect a massive weight loss , luminous skin and flat stomach?

Hi after Christmas I stopped eating sugar, wheat, rice and potatoes and, as far as possible, ate only once a day. (Vege). I don't weigh and because of my age and size my TDEE is v low - in the region of 1250.
By April I had lost a significant belly overhang. Stomach noticeably flatter. Was delighted.
Good luck.

I gave up sugar in 2015 for
A whole year. I lost 3 stone, my hair and skin looked fabulous, my tummy disappeared.

I have sadly put the weight all back on but I am about to start again!!

Good luck, keep going as you will
See the results.

One tip- when you give up sugar you take on fat (good fats!)

clary · 18/04/2019 15:22

I've done it for lent, like you I still eat fruit.

I can't believe I've stuck to it! I normally do 5:2 but have totally stopped that, so eating quite a lot. But often not eating anything instead of the offered cake iyswim.

I weighed 11.1 when I started, horrific for me. I have lost some but not loads, and it has yoyoed between 10.6 and 10.12.

I do think my fat tummy is flatter tho.

No sugar for about 4 years. Lost about half a stone (wasn't really overweight before but leaner now), better skin, less hungry, pms better. I do limit fruit as I find it gives me sugar cravings.

Watching this as DH has just today been diagnosed as “pre diabetic” and it’s the wake up call we both need, but has still given us a jolt.

LookMumNoFeet · 18/04/2019 16:01

Thanks everyone!
It was getting out of hand, especially at work - cake, biscuits every day. It had to stop.
I thought it was going to be harder, but actually it's been pretty ok. Fingers crossed it continues!

I gave up sugar over 12 months ago and feel loads better for it. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and I find if I eat sugar it makes me feel even more sleepy.
The key to sticking with it is making sure you have stuff around you that you can eat, especially at work. You can easily begin to feel left out and will cave in if you see others eating sugary stuff.
I always try and have healthy snacks around me.
And if I'm really craving sugary things I will have a piece or two of dark chocolate and that seems to take my cravings away.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/04/2019 17:20

Yes at the start of the year for a couple of months and really want and need to do it again. It instantly cuts out all the things you mentioned plus a lot of processed stuff. If convenience food was my only option I chose stuff that was only 5% carbs or less (so look in the per 100g column of the nutrition info).

Effects were:
SO MUCH LESS TIRED!!!! It was amazing.
Better skin
Flatter stomach
peace of mind knowing I was doing the best for myself
A sense of self control
Didn’t fart for like 2 months 😄 I’m overindulging on holiday this week and OMG... 🤣

GodolphianArabian · 18/04/2019 17:26

I have mostly and have lost 27 pounds and skin is really clear. Mental health improved and sleeping better. But struggling a bit now. Having the odd bad day.

TipseyTorvey · 18/04/2019 17:27

I did. It was amazing. I was a tidy 8/10 and pranced in and out of shops like a svelte little goat looking good in everything. For two years I was totally in control, then life went all tits up and I started eating things to make myself feel better. Still no actual crap sugar, but silly amounts of muesli and crisps and failing at roast potatoes. Now an uncomfortable size 12 with a flabby belly so planning a self intervention. Still not the size 16 I was though and I am still mostly very limited sugar/white carbs so feel better than I did when I started. I think its very addictive, I have previously managed to give up nicotine without turning back and think white carbs/sugar are in EVERYTHING so much harder to give up but will keep trying.

EngagedAgain · 18/04/2019 17:28

I would like to give up the sugary snacks, but it is my one weakness. I don't add sugar to anything so that's something. I have cut down on the sugary snacks, and other foods mainly dairy and stomach is going down. I go through phases where I eat more and more, then cut right back for a while then it gradually creeps up again.

Disneydarlings · 18/04/2019 17:33

When you say you've given up sugar what do you give up on? Just sugary snacks, cakes, chocolate? What about other foods like bread which contain sugar?

lljkk · 18/04/2019 17:46

I did for one yr, about 20 yrs ago. Concerned for my teeth. Er, nothing happened.

The only sweet things I was 'allowed' were 100% fruit. Otherwise nothing that tasted sweet.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 18/04/2019 18:00

I gave up sugar for the whole of January. I carried on eating complex sugars, so wholegrains and fruit in moderation. But I completely cut out sweets, cakes etc and anything with sugar added, like soups or pasta sauces. It actually meant I ate very little, if any processed foods.
It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I lost a stone, which I've kept off, even though I've been less disciplined lately.
I just generally felt much better; more energy, less fatigue, better cognitive function.
I'm going to get Easter out of the way and get back on it.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/04/2019 18:22

Oh another benefit is teeth still feel so clean and smooth at the end of the day 😍 so nice!

To PP asking exactly what people mean ‘gave up sugar’ - I still ate fruit, potatoes, granary bread etc. I would never really choose to eat pasta anyway, rice id always automatically have quinoa or cauliflower rice instead anyway. As I mentioned, crisps/processed stuff fine if under 5g sugar per 100g - I found a lot of savoury things that this works for. I eat a lot of whole/unprocessed stuff anyway so that avoids a lot of ingredients checking. Those are just my own guidelines!

LittleGreenLights · 18/04/2019 18:25

I’m followed the NHS Our Path 12 week plan which was originally designed for pre-diabetics. My skin is much clearer!

I have but never have the will power to stick to it. I usually start with a juice fast which does have fruit in it, but after 5-7 days of just juice it helps me control the cravings much better (although it's a hellish first 3 days). The longest I have longest is about 6 weeks. I give up fruits after that first week but I do have potatoes etc.

Like others I have more energy, lose weight, sleep better etc. I just have no will power 🙈

yogima · 19/04/2019 10:44

I need to control my sugar intake. It getting worse the older i get.

I don't eat wheat as I'm gluten intolerant and im vegetarian, with phases of dairy free. So I'm used to cutting out things that don't work for me. But being sugar free throws me.
What do you all eat instead? What snacks? What treats? Or does that not happen so much?

clary · 19/04/2019 10:47

As snacks I've eaten lots of fruit and salad bits at work. Really hitting my 10 a day!

In the evening I've been having a cup of herbal tea, a glass of wine some nights, handful of peanuts, that sort of thing.

Huntlybyelection · 19/04/2019 10:50

I'm about to.
I am eating too many sweets, cakes and chocolate and it's out if control.

clary · 19/04/2019 10:50

or protein, cold chicken, slice of cheese.
