How clean is your house?

AnxiousZebra · 18/04/2019 11:06

I'm a SAHM Mum (for now at least) of a toddler and we have a dog.

I clean kitchen surfaces (inc pulling stuff out to wipe under) hoover and steam clean downstairs floor every day

But, it feels like there are still BITS everywhere. I try to keep the sofa clean but I can see little marks all over it from the dog. There's lots of glass in our bathroom, always seems to have watermarks unless I've spent 30 mins polishing it,

When I look around I feel like everything is grubby even though I try hard to keep on top of it

Is it just me?!

It's a small house btw - I don't have vast wooden hallways to clean 😂

Eh, it's generally tidy, although can get untidy very quickly but I have a nine-week-old baby so I'm blaming that. We have a dog and cats so there tends to be hair and bits of the forest brought in fairly regularly and god knows what's under the sofa. Some stuff needs done like skirting boards, doors, etc, but I honestly can't be bothered right now. I'll probably pay for a deep clean when baby is a little older as I'm too lazy to do it myself Grin We stay on top of the day to day stuff alright though.

But that's just real life isn't it? It's not going to look like a showroom while you live there and unless you are prepared to make cleaning your life's obsession it never will look perfect, certainly not for long.
Deal with the bits that bug you -
e.g.
I read you can get something to wipe on glass that makes it easy-clean, haven't tried it but look into it.
Teach your dog not to go on the sofa or put a throw on it.
Enjoy your SAHM time as much as possible, have fun with your child - go out more is a good way to keep the house clean too!

Crushedvelvetcouch · 18/04/2019 11:16

Not very

thebeesknees123 · 18/04/2019 11:19

Mine is a bit like yours. I blame the sun for showing up the dirt

Bluntness100 · 18/04/2019 11:21

My house is clean and doesn't feel grubby. I've no idea why it takes you thirty mins to clean the glass in the bathroom, normally it's a spray of glass cleaner and wipe off. Takes seconds. Is it unusually huge?

formerbabe · 18/04/2019 11:21

Oh god, my house is the same op. Clean bathrooms every other day yet I can see dust/marks everywhere. Then I go to friends houses and they are spotless..where am I going wrong?! I hoover, then five minutes later, I see tiny specks of dust/crumbs/god knows what on carpet again. Sends me insane.

LuxLucetInTenebris · 18/04/2019 11:23

Clean enough.

WalterIris · 18/04/2019 11:27

Its clean, and can be tidy in 5 mins. But its always a mess at some point each day.
The cleaner came yesterday so its 'clean', but I already had to hoover again this morning due to crumbs seemingly everywhere.
Im half way through making hot cross buns, so there are trays of them raising, bits of flour around still, and random things out to finish them once raised. cook books out.
There is also paint brushes, roller and tray drying on drainer from when i used them first thing this morning. Plus some other decorating bits laying around and a ladder and paint pots etc in hallway that now need moving to the shed

ememem84 · 18/04/2019 11:34

currently - its fairly clean and tidy. but that's largely because i've just cleaned and tidied. also ds is at nursery while i'm home from work studying and writing an assignment. come this evening/tomorrow morning it'll be messy again. he is a crumb monster.

DramaAlpaca · 18/04/2019 11:36

Lux beat me to it - clean enough.

magimedi · 18/04/2019 11:37

This is my motto:

"Your house should be clean enough to be hygienic & dirty enough to be a home".

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/04/2019 11:38

My house is clean- bathrooms/ kitchens cleaned roughly every day (vague clean)- but my house is super messy in the week. Working full time with a toddler, the bedrooms are tips- lounge i try to keep clear for my sanity.

JosephineHass · 18/04/2019 11:38

Oh well, I have 4 years old twins, one of them is having ADHD so I basically don't stop all day long and our house is an average size and garden and dog.
I would say, that I do tidying up daily, dishes, mopping the floor, hoovering, laundry and all that regular cleaning, but anyway our house is mess.:/
Every time when I finally get on the top of the everything I can start all over again. 🤦‍♀️
My friends on the other side have a spotless houses.

lastqueenofscotland · 18/04/2019 11:49

My house Would make Mrs Hinch look like a scruff... Except my bedroom which looks like someone let a bomb off in a clothes shop.

bridgetosomewhere · 18/04/2019 11:50

Get some methylated spirits and wipe with a cloth over taps and mirrors and anything shiny. Takes seconds; no water marks or blurry bits!

We have two dc and a dog and live in the country so my house is tidy and clean but gets dusty quickly and needs attention every day!
Bathrooms need wiped down every day, floors hoovered etc and if I don't I can soon see the mess!

Bringbackthestripes · 18/04/2019 11:53

Pretty grim tbh. I’m recovering from an op so DH is supposed to be doing the cleaning. After he has cleaned the bathroom mirror is has so many smears in it that it looks worse than it did before! He also doesn’t use the nozzle to hoover the edges of rooms and him cleaning counters involves him sweeping all the crumbs and stuff onto the kitchen floor ffs

Titsywoo · 18/04/2019 12:01

It's ok. Id like it cleaner but practically there isnt enough time. Things like Windows, shower screens etc have to wait for my one day off a week when I clean. Under sofas, skirting boards etc when i have time. I have two jobs, run a business with dh, volunteer and do most of the chores myself so there have to be priorities. Perfection isn't practical and to be honest in other people's houses you glance at things you don't stare and visually criticise like you do in your own home!

April241 · 18/04/2019 12:07

Eugh. It's a total battle in our flat. We both work full time (me over 3 days, DH over 4 days) and have toddlers. Its CONSTANTLY messy. I literally spend all day doing dishes, wiping down worktops, putting on washings, hanging washings, picking crap off the floor. It's driving me mental.

SoundofSilence · 18/04/2019 12:11

Grubby. We both work full time, DP refuses to have a cleaner, has at least one unfinished DIY project in every room, fills all available space with mounds of tools and building materials and is so spectacularly untidy that I would be embarrassed to have a cleaner in anyway. I've decided that since it's not possible to work full time, pay attention to my children AND have a clean house, and the house wouldn't look nice however long I spent on it, the house will just have to go to hell preferably taking DP with it. It gets whatever time I have left over. I focus on the kitchen being clean enough for safe food preparation and there being clean clothes to wear. I do dream of things being different.

AnneTwackie · 18/04/2019 12:12

Clean enough to be healthy, dirty enough to be happy. Let it go OP, obsessing over your tiny piece of this huge, beautiful planet is a complete waste of time and no one who likes you enough to visit cares what it looks like- Get out in the sunshine!

IncrediblySadToo · 18/04/2019 12:13

With a toddler and a dog it’s like clearing the path of snow, when it’s still snowing.

Some houses just seem to get dusty/bits much quicker than other houses. My current house is the dustiest house I’ve ever lived in, the smallest too - which doesn’t help.

Try not to worry so much. As long as the kitchen surfaces and the toilet is clean, the rest is just cosmetic.

It is frustrating though when you try hard but just can’t get it to look nice for more than 5 minutes!

I got a Harvey Water Softner 18 months ago. Although they’re bloody expensive
(£1600), they’re worth it. No more limescale and no more water marks. It’s life changing!

Getting the carpets cleaned and washing the curtains helps too, it feels fresher and it takes a ton of dust/crap out of your environment.

Plus, yeah, going out helps!

GrouchyKiwi · 18/04/2019 12:19

I have 3 small children at home and a large, fluffy puppy. Our house is cleanish.

The kitchen-diner is cleaner than normal today as the puppy had diarrhoea overnight so it has had a big mop. Mopping doesn't happen very often.

BlackPrism · 18/04/2019 12:33

Not very, I clean as I go but by the weekend it always needs an hour or two being spent on it. Does my head in

BlackPrism · 18/04/2019 12:34

But then the London air makes everything turn black in my house so I'm not surprised
