Fitbit not logging steps when pushing pram

redbedheadd · 17/04/2019 14:59

Hi, I've just been walking non-stop for 3.5 hours and when I got back my Fitbit said I'd done 4000 steps - that seems impossible... I'm sure it should be about 12,000.

Has anyone had problems with step counter when pushing a pram? Anything that helped?

It's the same when pushing a trolley! Can you push with only 1 hand every so often?

churchthecat · 17/04/2019 15:01

It's because fitbit picks up on arm swings. If you're arms don't swing it doesn't think you're walking. You might want to use strava or get a foot pedometer.

Wistfulthinking · 17/04/2019 15:02

Hi

I put my Fitbit in my pocket instead when pushing a pram or pushchair as it used to register as cycling, not steps.

I hope that helps you!

It's probably because your arm is not moving when holding onto the pram. I would suggest you attach it to your ankle or shoelaces (I know some nurses who do this) so that it registers all the steps.

redbedheadd · 17/04/2019 15:03

Ah good to know I'm not going mad! Yes I can put in my pocket maybe. I can push one handed sometimes but it's quite woody where I walk so I need two hands sometimes.

How annoying though!

I found this too and putting it in my pocket was the answer. X

Scrumptiousbears · 17/04/2019 15:15

I found this with a buggy pissed me off no end.

Saladd0dger · 17/04/2019 15:17

My charge 2 picks up my steps with a pushchair. Never had any problems with it not

Teddybear45 · 17/04/2019 15:25

If you don’t move your arms you won’t necessarily burn the same amount of calories, so i’d leave it. Fitbit’s caloric burn of walking depends on moving arms and legs.

anonforthespies43267 · 17/04/2019 15:26

Put it on your ankle or in your pocket. Only issue with ankle is you’ll probably look like you’re on a police tag if it’s on show lol.
My sister had this problem too x

MaybeitsMaybelline · 17/04/2019 15:28

I always put mine round my ankle (it won’t fasten) then put my socks over it and boots on when I go to the supermarket as pushing the trolley jusgvtells the fit bit I am sat on my arse!

Equally sweeping the drive really boosts the steps!

TheGodmother · 17/04/2019 15:28

Strange, it registers when I'm pushing a wheelchair. In fact it logged me as cycling!!

PoliticalBiscuit · 17/04/2019 15:30

I didn't want to lose it out of my pocket so I attach it to my bra strap.

I would be amazed if swinging my arms burned more calories than pushing the buggy...

Mine does this too OP, very annoying. If I go for a long or fast enough walk it'll register it as cycling.

Often cited as an example of technology not being designed with women in mind (although I guess it would be hard based on how a pedometer works).

I have a free pedometer app on my phone that will record steps with the buggy. Not as accurate as the FitBit but better than nothing.

(And, obviously - you still took the steps, even if they weren't recorded!)

redbedheadd · 17/04/2019 17:28

Yeah -- I had a very physically tough pregnancy and I'm trying to rebuild myself physically slowly and all I can do at the minute is walk so it's a bit annoying when I'm really proud of doing a long one and it says I've only walked two miles!

I'll try on my ankle / pocket as everyone suggested.

And agree pushing the pram can be hard work !!! Extra 💪

Mine thinks I'm riding a bike if I'm pushing the pushchair!

If you go onto the app and use the track exercise function, it will track your distance and calculate steps based on either your actual stride length if you've entered it, or an estimate if you haven't manually changed it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/04/2019 17:32

Also if you use the track function, it then correlates with your Fitbit if it measures HR and gives you calorie burn data etc as well!

Derpess · 17/04/2019 19:48

I discovered this after 40mins on a treadmill! Now I wind it through my shoelaces!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/04/2019 19:52

I suppose it depends what Fitbit you have, mine's an AltaHR and it picks up treadmill and walking/pushing pretty accurately. Can you adjust the settings to sensitive? Would that help?

dementedpixie · 17/04/2019 19:53

You can set it to track your workout so if you tell it you're going on the treadmill it will record your activity/he, etc.

dementedpixie · 17/04/2019 19:54

Heartrate

PencereTencere · 17/04/2019 19:59

I fasten mine around my bra strap when I'm pushing the buggy. Steps don't count if they're not counted. Wink

TheGodmother · 18/04/2019 22:55

I pushed the lawn mower around today and again that logged me as riding a bike.

So that and wheelchair pushing is how fast Fitbit thinks I cycle. Must be a tricycle then coz surely they must be too slow to keep upright on a bike!!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/04/2019 23:22

I have a Fitbit and it’s clear they weren’t tested on knitters - if I knit fast, it counts it as steps - so you could have your walk and then do some vigorous knitting, to get the right number of steps!

cakeandchampagne · 18/04/2019 23:27

“......then do some vigorous knitting....” Smile
