Work Socialising

Not really an AIBU, more to see if anyone else feels the same!

I have no issues with the people I work with, we get on well. There tends to be a couple of outings including some at the homes of people, where there’s generally a +1 invite for partners of people only.

As much as I like the people I work with, my weekends are ‘my time’ & I want to do my own thing. I’m happy spending my time doing what I want to do, I like having two days to myself.

If you decline an invite, there’s almost a post mortem on why you’re not going. I really do get they’re being nice & wanting to include everyone, and I don’t mind the odd night out.

Am I being weird or does anyone else feel the same?

I've never socialised hugely with people I work with.
Over the decades, it has depended a bit on the Team / on the culture at the time, so some I've gone out with more than others, but dh has never been expected to come.
I've always got on with people I work with - it's not that, but I have my own friends and by own things I do outside of work. Work is work, and I don't rely on it for my social life.
I expect there is the potential for some difficult situations if you socialise all the time with colleagues.

I love the girls i work with and we are a little family. We spend more time with each other than our real families & i am more than happy to spend my free time with them.

I was in a profession that naturally excludes outsiders and it ended up being your only social life and pre existing friends dropped off gradually.
I wish I’d spent more time on non job friendships.

We go out sometimes but don't socialise at each others' homes. It's nice to get the balance right.

I've got a kid. She's my go to excuse..sorry no childcare. They might make random comments but normally it stops with that. I attend one or two events a year at the most. They're lovely people, I get on really well with some,it's just not really my thing.

I like the people I work with and I’m happy to socialise with them.

We work quite long hours and I imagine that they need a change of scene from work people. I know I do. Hence, no one makes much of an effort to organise socialising. It’s always a good evening if they do, though.

Ive been working at my place for 16 months and I only went out with them at Christmas, only as it was Christmas. They tend to do bar meals/cinema quite often but i make my excuse. Which really isn’t one as my Saturday/Sunday mornings are ferrying the kids to football so im up early and dont drink those nights.

I have my own friends for socialising and prefer them to my work colleagues.

Blackandpurple · 17/04/2019 08:13

Oh and my previous workplace, i was there for 5 years and never socialised with them. No interest whatsoever

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/04/2019 08:21

We go out after work once in a while (no partners) but I like my weekends workfree, even though I really like my colleagues. However when I was younger and single I had several jobs that I had moved area for and along with many others (these were large corporation jobs) didn't know anyone locally apart from work, so we did socialise a lot. I always found it hard making friends outside work in a new part of the country and my old friends were scattered far and wide so couldn't meet up every weekend.

pourmeanotherglass · 17/04/2019 08:43

I enjoy the occasional night out with colleagues, but prob no more than once every couple of months, and there's no pressure to come up with an excuse if I don't feel like it.

GrumpyOldMare · 17/04/2019 09:02

I've been at my present job nearly five years and never socialised with my workmates. We all get on really well and trust each other but for me,they're not friend friends if you get me.

Besides which, all the ''work do's'' are in one of the small towns near work which are difficult to get to without a car - I'm not cycling back to the train station at 11pm. It's enough that I cycle, get the train, cycle to work from the station and reverse on the way home. I don't want to spend my time off doing that, much as I like my workmates,I've got other things I'd rather do.
