Relocating shortly, which ones are the best for having their own identity and good connections to the town centre?

Are you renting or buying and what's your budget? Dr Andrews/bishopston, bedminster, southville.....all fairly pricey though...Easton...

cleomummy · 16/04/2019 21:26

Depends what you are looking for and budget. The nicest, in some opinions, are bishopston, St. Andrews, Henleaze, Clifton. Westbury on trym, westbury Park, Redlands,Cotham . But they are expensive. All easy to get to the centre from.

NW2SW · 17/04/2019 00:52

Rent initially, buy long term. I know the centre fairly well and wouldn't personally class Clifton as a suburb.

Looking for somewhere with a sense of its own identity, livable, green spaces etc

Easton looks interesting!

Bath Wink

NW2SW · 17/04/2019 01:13

That's an option! Quite keen on Larkhall. Just worried it'll be unpleasant in summer with hoarded of tourists.

Are you looking for quiet or somewhere quirky with a bit of life? What is your budget? What do you class as a superb? Traffic in Bristol is shocking so you would need to be on the right side of the centre. Do you need schools?

I live near Gloucester Road which I love.

NW2SW · 17/04/2019 07:38

A bit of life, e.g things in your doorstep rather than having to schlep into town for a coffee, but doesn't need to be rowdy. We're not massive fans of Clifton because of how busy it is.

2 bed for £800-£1200 pm ideally, or 3 bed for £350k-£400k.

Easton. Very vibrant, easy train access to centre, very easy to join motorway too.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 17/04/2019 07:47

Maybe try around Victoria Park, or Redfield/St George.

showgirl · 17/04/2019 07:50

I live in north Bristol. (Well south glos really.) Think Bradley stoke, Stoke Gifford, little stoke. It's got excellent motorway access, train stations, close to the mall. Also it has good primary schools. Secondary is ok but the transport links are there for further afield. Lots of parks and huge green spaces. Lots of baby and toddler groups. You would easily be able to rent a 2 bed for that amount and buy a 3 /4 bed as well.

yellowsun · 17/04/2019 07:53

I would also look at Horfield.

Generally, that budget for rental might get you a flat more central/ in more ‘nice’ areas or a house further out.

It’s hard to advise until we know where you’ll be working.

maxiflump1 · 17/04/2019 07:56

Maybe think about east Bristol. Staple hill and downed area have cafes and shops and quite nice housing areas. We are in Warmley which is nice but can't really go for coffee etc without driving or getting on a bus as it's right out on the edge of the suburbs . I would avoid Easton if you don't want busy.

NW2SW · 17/04/2019 08:31

Thank you all, I haven't heard of most of these. I hope everyone's as friendly and helpful as you lovely lot when we move Grin

No idea re prices but a number of my more youthful colleagues rent/buy in St. George's and love it.

Justmemyselfandi999 · 17/04/2019 09:04

I'm in the same area as Showgirl, have lived North Bristol all of my life. It's a lovely area, plenty of parks and green space. Winterbourne sounds like it would tick lots of your boxes

maxiflump1 · 17/04/2019 09:24

@NW2SW I think you'll find Bristolians a friendly bunch! It's a great city. Or gert lush as we say around here! Grin

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 17/04/2019 11:08

If you can visit in advance for a few days I’d try going for a wander along East street/North street, Church Road and St Mark’s Road to get a feel for each of those areas (Southville/Bedminster, Redfield/St George and Easton respectively). Hanham might also be a good shout, but house prices might be a bit higher there.

If house ‘type’ matters that will also help you decide. Easton, Redfield, Southville and Bedminster are mainly terraces, small gardens, no garages, terrible parking but beautiful houses. St George and Hanham have more semi-detached houses, bigger gardens and more space but fewer period features.

hettie · 17/04/2019 20:41

St George is not far from the centre, has green spaces and is more affordable. Easton is nearer, my re of an identity, bit pricy and your budget would struggle....

Fireinthegrate · 17/04/2019 21:18

My niece rents in Cheswick Village. I’ve never been but she loves it. She has a new baby and has made lots of friends there. She and her husband hope to buy there soon

exexpat · 17/04/2019 21:23

You'd probably get quite a lot for your budget in Fishponds, which has a reasonably lively high street (gentrifying a bit recently with some more upmarket/hip coffee shops and so on) and some good green spaces (Oldbury Court/Snuff Mills) which are nice if you have DC.

exexpat · 17/04/2019 21:28

For example, this house is in Fishponds near the parks and the nicer stretch of the high street (with Porto Lounge, Coffee #1 and Grounded): www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-60208938.html

But really if you are moving to Bristol, a big factor will be where you are likely to need to commute to, because traffic can be awful and public transport not always great.

Ribeebie · 17/04/2019 21:33

I like east Bristol - Hanham, Warmley, Oldland are all nice. Another option is Keynsham - almost a little town in itself, and direct train and bus links to bath and Bristol and train goes direct to London. Lots of nearby green space. Love this part of the world!
