What do you do when you’re bored at work?

When it’s quiet and you’ve done every other thing you can think of and you’re bored off your tits and it’s only 10.16am, what do you do?!!

I need some ideas! Any good websites I can look at? What do I need to organise that I haven’t already?! Obvs it needs to be something that allows me to look busy 😬 otherwise I might shrivel up and die of boredom by 5pm

Start typing your future best selling novel.

Freaking0ut · 16/04/2019 10:54

stripyhoglets I don’t think it’ll always be like this but at the moment it is. I’ve just left a job what was a hundred miles an hour and it’s very odd now.

Regina so does mine. I’ve already done several over the last week but will have a look for another one

I work from home so luckily I don't feel like I need to look busy if I'm not. But I do work for a company so I can't take the piss.

I do have a couple of side "projects" I'm working on which I can do in downtime.

But if there's absolutely nothing to do, I watch something or listen to some music. The main thing is I'm available to speak to customers.

IntentsandPorpoises · 16/04/2019 10:56

@Freaking0ut I wonder if you work for the same organisation as me...linked to the education field/teaching, Easter holidays and a big event happening this week meaning most people are out of the office.

Looks around to see if anyone else is on MN...

Persimmonn · 16/04/2019 10:59

E-learning. I usually have a tonne load of shit to catch up on.

Cleaning/tidying areas

Sorting through bags of stuff that have been delivered (can’t go into much more detail than that!)

I always try to find stuff to do because I feel guilty. If I’ve worked solidly during a busy day and then it’s quiet the last hour or so, I happily go on my phone and mumsnet 😆

iamthere123 · 16/04/2019 11:02

Deffo listen to no such thing as a fish very funny and informative podcast by the QI elves who get all the facts for the show. Then you can annoy people by telling them very interesting facts they didn’t need to know!!

CakeNinja · 16/04/2019 11:03

Ha! School staff here without a single spare minute in the day - there’s so much to do that I end up going back after I’ve actually finished to do the things I would do if I ever got a chance during the day Grin
Enjoy the sneaky peace!

Freaking0ut · 16/04/2019 11:14

cakeninja I totally get it, the days that are so crazy that you barely have time to go to the loo!

iamthere thanks will give it a listen.

Persimmonn can you recommend any good e-learning websites/providers?

University coursework

Food shopping

Sorting out home admin tasks like credit cards, insurance, booking holiday parking etc

Wanderer1 · 16/04/2019 11:28

Online courses: MOOCs are great, free and run by too universities globally, you can learn about all sorts!

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 16/04/2019 11:32

I’m a teacher, I never run out of things which need to be done.

Persimmonn · 16/04/2019 11:36

freaking they’re assigned by my workplace (NHS). Not really sure of any e-learning sites apart from codeacadamy to learn how to code.

If I were you, and it’s too often boring like this at work (I mean everyday), I’d ask for more responsibility, if that’s possible. Do you have paperwork to build up for apparaisals? It’s the worse thing when you have nothing to do at work, very guilt inducing! However, if you’re just going through a slow week (it’s very quiet at our workplace atm and we are welcoming it!), then just enjoy it. It’s usually the quiet before the shitstorm!

AvengersAssemble · 16/04/2019 11:46

Bored at work? Oh I wish I had time to be bored, we never stop!

DebbieFiderer · 16/04/2019 13:11

I usually have a nap, if I have a big enough gap between patients and nothings else that needs doing. Appreciate that wouldn't work in an office job!

Ha, I unintentionally fell asleep at work the other week. We had a very bad day shift but the kids were settling down and had gone out with two members of staff. I thought I'd catch up with the evening news, I put the tv on and sat on the settee with my files and diary. I obviously dozed off and woke up half an hour later really disorientated!
Thankfully I only had one job to do and that was tidy the kitchen so alll good!

Freaking0ut · 16/04/2019 13:18

Ooh a nap! Perhaps I could get a pair of those glasses that have wide awake eyes on them 😂

Mumsnet, news sites, buzzfeed, and typing online speed tests Blush

Itstartedinbarcelona · 16/04/2019 13:31

i had this a job I did as a student for 12 hour shifts on weekends. I used it to catch up on coursework - and practiced touch typing and learnt shorthand. I got really good at the latter. But I remember those long depressing shifts! I much prefer to be busy.

reallybadidea · 16/04/2019 13:33

I have a competition with myself to see how many times I can spin round on my chair from one kick-off.

Lllot5 · 16/04/2019 13:35

Make coffee eat biscuits. Chat to colleagues. Go for a walk round (top tip take a clipboard). Find a shady spot and read.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 16/04/2019 14:13

It's dead in my office as it's Easter and hardly anyone is in. Yesterday I went home for lunch to put a wash on and found my magazine had been delivered so I took it back to work and read it for the rest of the afternoon.

darnsarf · 16/04/2019 14:37

Mums net, Facebook, insta, news websites, online food shop, look at holidays and my current new obsessions is wordstacks Blush
Luckily I use my mobile for most my work so it doesn't look wrong if I'm constantly on my phone all day
