Looking for a Harry Potter type series!

When I was in my teens I used to love reading the Harry Potter books and going on the forums to discuss the books, particularly what would happen in the next books before they came out! I'm looking for another book series to get into, ideally one with some kind of a 'fandom' I could get involved with. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I read chronicles of ancient darkness to my DD. We both loved them but they don't seem to have got the recognition they, imo, deserve so I don't know if there is a big fan base
Plus they are all already written so they don't actually meet your criteria but we'll worth reading

I've recently started to read the Rivers of London series. They were bought for my husband and he's not much of a reader. I've thoroughly enjoyed the ones I've read and I can well imagine there would be a fandom/numerous forums around the novels and the comics. Might be worth a nosy?

The mortal instruments? I get fairyloot crates and they are based on major fandoms so you could look at their Facebook/instagram page.

Another vote for Rivers if London- brilliant books.
Have you heard of the St Mary’s series, by Jodi Taylor - another excellent series with novels and short stories.
If the genre doesn’t have to be SF/fantasy, then the Ruth Galloway series by Elli Griffiths are good reading.

MockerstheFeManist · 15/04/2019 18:08

Phillip Pullman's 'His dark Materials'

BernardoTeashop · 15/04/2019 18:47

Have you read the Sookie Stackhouse/ True Blood series. There is quite a big fandom

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 15/04/2019 18:49

Definitely His Dark Materials. Also try Guy Gavriel Kay, or Melanie Rawn’s Sunrunners series. Both of them have internet forums.

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 15/04/2019 19:10

Oh yes I would third his dark materials

Felicicat · 15/04/2019 19:31

I second His Dark Materials and Rivers of London. Both great. Also, The Magicians by Lev Grossman.

But for a proper series that has a great online theory-sharing following it has to be A Song of Ice and Fire. The books and TV show have diverged to such an extent now that there is still some mystery as to where the books are going.

The Morrigan Crowe series (2 books so far) has been hailed as the new HP phenomenon. DD (13 and a diehard HP fan) and I think it’s a very promising start.
Set in a world powered by “Wunder”, Morrigan is one of only two existing Wundersmiths. The other went really bad (remind you of anybody?)
There is time shifting, mind-reading, multi-talented kids, a London Underground using umbrellas and a huge cast of humanoids and monsters.
Love it!

Sgtmajormummy · 15/04/2019 19:53

Not sure how fandoms work, but here’s one nevermoor.fandom.com/wiki/Morrigan_Odelle_Crow

Makemeachannelofyourpeas · 15/04/2019 20:01

The Farseer books by Robin Hobb, (starting with Assassins Apprentice) are brilliant. I read them on my commute and found myself praying my train would be delayed to give me longer in that world!

MerlinsScarf · 15/04/2019 20:04

I came here to say Mortal Instruments and Morrigan Crow too! Great taste, everyone.

One that's a bit more grown up (I don't mean that as a good or bad thing, but content wise) is the Shades of Magic series by VE Schwab, the same author's City of Ghosts novel is being made into a series soon. Caraval by Stephanie Garber? It's a bit more romance based but plenty of magic and strange worlds going on there.

TheFirstOHN · 15/04/2019 20:12

The Magicians (Lev Grossman).

LumosMaxima · 15/04/2019 20:14

Another vote for the mortal instruments, I absolutely love anything by Cassandra Clare!!

GingerPCatt · 15/04/2019 20:18

The Skullduggery Pleasant books by Landy. Like HP the protagonist starts off at 12 (I think it’s been awhile) and she grows up throughout the series. They remind me of HP crossed with Good Omens - a blend of Gaimin and Pratchett. Plus cool female heroine which is always a bonus in my opinion.

Walkthroughthefire · 15/04/2019 20:25

Green rider

SargeantAngua · 15/04/2019 22:00

Another vote for Cassandra Clare's books. I'm currently on Sarah J Maas' Throne of Glass series, which is also very good.

ThunderStorms · 15/04/2019 22:33

The belgariad by David eddings

redbedheadd · 15/04/2019 22:37

A discovery of witches is good!

ImportantWater · 15/04/2019 22:39

There is definitely Rivers of London fandom and fan fiction but please do read the first four books at least before dipping your toes in as otherwise you will almost certainly spoil yourself in a number of ways!

ImportantWater · 15/04/2019 22:41

Have you read any of JK’s Strike crime novels? There is a fandom around those as well. Well, there is certainly fan fiction anyway!

Constantine1986 · 16/04/2019 10:00

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions! I've read all the Rivers of London books which I loved. Have just ordered the first Morrigan Crow book and can't wait to start it!
