OMG the stench

I went to get something from our caravan the other day and there was a funny smell.
After a bit of bloodhound like detection work, I opened the fridge, then the ice box.
There were blue bottles and maggots, and something that may once have been a chicken portion.

And the smell Envynot envy

So any advice for getting rid of really nasty niffs- and any tales of similar woes to make me feel better?

Bicarb of Soda - it’s a miracle product. Either that or a new fridge!!

richdotcom · 15/04/2019 07:20

Burn it 😂 (sorry, I've got no actual advice)

Palominoo · 15/04/2019 07:23

My son brought home a melon and ate some then put it in a carrier bag and shoved it at the back of the fridge.

It went off and the smell was putrid. Gag inducing.

Gave elderly neighbour a lift home from an event, she was a bit wiffy so when my car developed an aroma I rather uncharitably decided she'd had a week on the seat.

My car is generally a tip so carried on using it, occasionally moaning about the smell. Smell got worse DH became sick of the moans, so did a search for the source of the smell. He discovered a pint bottle of milk under the passenger seat - milk that had curdled and turned into cottage cheese. Took weeks for the smell to disappear completely.

EastMidsGPs · 15/04/2019 07:29

Wee ... I didn't kidnap her for a week

I have tried bicarbonate.
There is a dish of it in there now.

Can't get a new fridge, too expensive, unfortunately.

Eastmids at least the milk was in a bottle, no soaked into the carpet.

I was going to say, assuming it's a touring caravan not a static a new fridge can be anything up to £1000

azulmariposa · 15/04/2019 07:39

Dd left a prawn sandwich wrapper in the seat pocket of my car Confused
For weeks every time I got in I could smell fish. Thought I had a problem down there!

averylongtimeago · 15/04/2019 07:44

It's not as bad a smell as when the dog had an upset tummy in the van on an overnight ferry crossing...

We could smell the van from 50 paces.

Sprinkle the bicarb into the fridge.

SaskiaRembrandt · 15/04/2019 07:44

If you haven't got any bicarb, ground coffee is supposed to work too.

Japonicaflower2 · 15/04/2019 07:47

Try a bowl of vinegar, it absorbs paint odours.
Wipe down with bleach solution?

longwayoff · 15/04/2019 07:59

Put tablespoon of bicarbonate into bowl of water and wash the fridge with it. When it dries it will leave a powdery deposit. Bowl of water, tablespoon of vinegar. Wash fridge. Put dish of bicarb in fridge. My sympathy. I know just how it feels Angry

longwayoff · 15/04/2019 08:01

Oh, remember to take a toothbrush to the seal when cleaning.

Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 15/04/2019 08:17

I once had a putrefying shrew in my welly (thanks DCat). I wondered what the bad smell in the utility room was just as I put my foot in to it. It was beyond horrific taking my foot out of there. Whatever the worst smell you could think of is, I guarantee that putrefying rodent beats it!

OP, I second bicarb. Also, when it’s plugged in and cold again you’ll notice it less.

(Note to self: be sure to empty fridge after next weekends trip in caravan!)

Grin well, 🤣 actually

roundligament · 15/04/2019 08:22

Sell it

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/04/2019 08:23

Cut a lemon in half and put the halves in the fridge, works better than bicarb ime.

PlatypusLeague · 15/04/2019 08:29

Wipe out the inside with diluted Dettol. Also check the little drainage hole inside the fridge at the back, and underneath.

Under our stairs really started to honk. DH and I had many passive aggressive conversations about each other’s trainers which are stored there. The smell got worse and worse until we discovered a wedge of Stilton at the bottom of the picnic bag....

JustAWaferThinMint · 15/04/2019 08:48

This has brought back memories of my father's car as a child. He spilled a pint of milk in it, but he has no sense of smell and didn't realise so didn't clean it up. The three of us kids used to sit in the back gagging, while he accused us of making an unnecessary fuss. In the end, my mother made him get rid of it. He couldn't sell it privately, it was so rancid and had to be traded in for next to nothing!

longwayoff · 15/04/2019 08:52

Half a tin of decomposing dog food under seat of leased car returned for an upgrade. Phone call and photo, 'we found this, do u want it back?'. Must have been there at least 2 weeks.
