Tenants will have more protection

This is good news for tennants.

Still, it's an indication that the Tories are getting pretty desperate to hold onto power that they're even considering it. Goes against a lot of their core voters I'd imagine.

I think we'll see a lot of these sweeteners for younger voters in the months to come.

No different to what Corbyn did regarding student fees knowing he had no intention of fulfilling it

Boom76 so you don’t think Tory government will see this through?

I think they have done something similar in Scotland recently - at the same time changing the law enabling lls to end tenancies for specific reasons such as non-payment of rent. It may be a bit early to know the effect there, but it would be interesting to know.

I really hope this happens. I think it's very fair that there should be exceptions to let landlords get back a property if they need it to live in or need to sell it, but it would be great to be able to raise issues without worrying you'll be seen as an awkward tenant and asked to leave.

As the articles I've read this morning have pointed out though, this won't stop the landlord from increasing the rent to "price them out" instead.

If you have time, listen to the Kate Faulkner video, it's about halfway down the page. She talks a lot of sense.

Surely a large price hike would be seen as purposeful and then if landlord takes case to court for partial non payment it would be seen as contentious. Especially if tenant continued to pay previous amount

Really hope this happens.

I once got evicted because I dared to complain about getting electric shocks from the pull cord in the bathroom, water dripping from the ceiling and the lights fizzing and going on and off. Once we got environmental health in we were out. That was definitely a revenge eviction but i’d Never heard the term before so didn’t do anything about it.
