How long did it take to buy your forever home??

Myself and my partner are looking to buy our first property hopefully by the end of the year and I can honestly say it will not be a property of my dreams and albeit I cannot predict the future I don't see it as our forever home. (We will have to start small in a not as nice area to get on the ladder!) We are both 29 so still both relatively young, no DC yet!

It made me wonder how long it took or will take to be able to purchase your dream forever home?

Bought our forever home at the age of 29 in 2015, but only possible to do so due to a large inheritance. I'd still rather have my dad than this house.

Sorry about your loss regina 🌹⚘🌷🌼

I guess I may not have worded it brilliantly when I said forever home! I guess the house that you see yourself living in a long time without wanting to move and feel content =)

40 I think. It's not my dream home from the outside and it's not got a big garden. But it's big and how I like it decorated inside, and walking distance to local school bars doctors restaurants etc and the city Centre. My view on what was my forever home has changed over time as I realized I like a short commute and being the heart of the community more than a period house with a massive garden. I am so lucky to be living her and bringing up a family who will be able to take advantage of all the opportunities on their doorstep.

At 32. We will owned a starter home for 6 years before that. Prior to that we rented for 3 years.

We started with a small ex-council flat in a less than desirable area in 2003. In 2007 we bought a small 2 bed terraced house. Last year we bought our forever 4 bed house Smile so I guess it took us 15 years.

We couldn’t buy a house until we were 35. Not our dream house but all we could afford. We’re hoping to upgrade before we’re 50. I doubt that will be our dream house either, unless our circumstances change drastically we simply can’t afford the type of house we’d like to live in. To be honest we feel fortunate to have a decent house at all.

First house bought at 23 (DH 34) 3 bed detached, but I was never quite happy. Moved last year (now 39 and 50) and this is hopefully our long term house. I won't say forever, it may prove too big in the future especially the garden (it is a large 3 bed detached) and the stairs are rubbish for getting a stairlift in, but for now we are happy.

In 1988, in my early thirties. We drove past and saw a tiny home made for sale sign on a rickety wooden fence.
Arranged to go and see the property, and when we came out we said to each other "This is the one".
Over 30 years later, we're still here.

Bought first house at 25, moved to second at 27 moving to forever home soon and I’m 34.

Happyspud · 15/04/2019 20:23

Bought first and forever home at 32. But we’d been living abroad since university and only came back when we had our first child and it was then we bought.

I agree with the pp, it's twee and your needs change. Why try and predict what you will need 20 years down the line? No one bought a forever home 20 years ago,or even 10 for that matter. You bought a house and if you were lucky enough you loved it and didn't move.

kaytee87 · 15/04/2019 20:28

Luckily our first house is our 'forever home' unless we want to downsize when we're older.
I was 27 and DH 30 when we moved in although DH had owned it for a couple of years beforehand (now remortgaged in both of our names). We should be 48 and 51 when it's paid off.
I appreciate how lucky we are every day
