Lost clothing

Last weekend my friend took her DS and his friend to the seaside. After a lovely couple of days they returned home and friend dropped her son's pal(X) off at home.
An hour later my friend received a call from X's mother who says X's new sweatshirt is missing from his bag. My friend sorted through their clothes and it definitely is not in with their clothes.
My friend things she needs to replace it and is very upset as it costs £80 and she is on a low income and doesn't have that amount to spend on a sweatshirt.
X's mother is expecting a new sweatshirt.
Wwyd?

How old are the children?

BlueMerchant · 13/04/2019 15:08

Low income and spending 80 quid on a sweatshirt? Seriously

Wauden · 13/04/2019 15:25

She should be more sensible with her spending, then!

moreismore · 13/04/2019 15:26

I read it as the friend is low income... not the mum who bought the sweatshirt

flameycakes · 13/04/2019 15:27

@moreismore Reread, you maybe right xxxx

I think at 9 he can keep track of his own clothes. It’s not like she let him wear it to go mud wrestling and trashed it. I wouldn’t feel obliged to replace-I’d provide a helpful list of places he may have left it and let the mum ring round.

I wouldn't do anything. Things get lost sometimes, it's unfortunate. It's not like she's lost it on purpose so I think the other mum is unreasonable to expect a new one. It was nice of your friend to take the child on holiday.

Yes, it's my friend who can't afford to replace this other boy's sweatshirt.
My friend is also very timid and is frightened of what X's mother will do if she says no to buying another.
I suggested offering some money towards a new sweatshirt but not the full £80. My friend thinks this will make her look rude?

Your friend shouldn't pay anything. Kids lose clothes all the time.
