UK bucket list suggestions?

I'm living in the UK for the next year or so and am trying to do and see as much as I can in this time. I live in a fairly central part of England and now that the weather is warming up I'm really trying to make the most of every weekend I have.

I've been to London many times and have been to Bath, Oxford and the Cotswolds too. But I'm keen to hear what your favourite places/experiences are - I'm trying to put together a list of must do things to tick off before I leave. The Lake District is definitely on there, as is the Jurassic Coast, but there are so many places to go and things to see that I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed! I'm keen to see places and do things that are a bit off the beaten track so not necessarily keen on doing Cornwall in the height of summer Grin Scotland would be a bit of a stretch target but hoping to get to Edinburgh at least!

Hit me with your must do places and hidden gems please Grin what would you prioritise if you only had a year to do it in?

Chester
St ives. Beautiful

York, Blenheim Palace, a proper castle - Conwy in Wales is good. Unfortunately Warwick has been turned into something more akin to a theme park.

Touring Theatre productions, or west end special offers.

Afternoon tea somewhere posh.

Cockles at the seaside - Malden cocklesheds or similar.

Look at joining English Heritage / National Trust. As an overseas visitor you may be able to get a discount & it will get you into lots of attractions.

@MabelStark I was just going to say Whitby Abbey & the 199 steps!

The Ironbridge & The Wrekin (inspired LOTR) in Shropshire.

Highgate Cemetery West.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 13/04/2019 19:12

Just seen Windsor Castle on TV. I'd add that to the list! Maybe find a nice pub on the river at Marlow or somewhere too.

BikeRunSki · 13/04/2019 19:49

Oh yes. Definitely Whitby Abbey.

Climb the 3 peaks (not as a 24 hour challenge) but it'll let you see the Scottish Locks (I would climb Ben Nevis one day then canoe a lock the next), visit one of the Scottish Isles too. Then in the lakes I'd climb Scarfel Pike via Great End (hard scramble but rewarding) then go into Keswick the next day and buy some thunder and lightning ice cream. In Snowdonia, I'd climb Snowdon then go on a beach horse ride.

I'd visit Harrogate and eat afternoon tea at Betty's.

Visit the big stately homes and palaces. (If you like Downton, visit Highclere, Pride and Prejudice then you want Chatsworth etc)

A must would be a canoe down the Wye Valley - gorgeous part of the country and I'd visit Malvern too.

Then you need to get yourself to Cornwall (early summer so it's not too busy) cream tea is essential!

Then Norfolk too!

  • Northumberland coast: Tynemouth, Bamburgh or Warkworth
  • Northumberland National Trust properties such as Cragside , Wallington Hall or Holy Island (Lindisfarne Castle)
  • Hiking around the Cheviots (Breamish Valley and Linhope Spout are my favourite)
  • Beamish Museum
  • Newcastle Quayside
  • Durham City and cathedral
Aria999 · 14/04/2019 04:34

Tintern abbey (on your way to welsh coast, which I second).

Aria999 · 14/04/2019 04:34

Oxford.

drspouse · 14/04/2019 04:42

Some great ideas here, if you go for the sleeper train then Skye/Hebrides is a logical extension.

ItsalmostSummer · 14/04/2019 04:49

Wales - go look at castles there - any. They’re beautiful
Port Merion (it’s french and really different but stunning!)
Hadrians Wall - just phenomenal that’s all
Scotland -
Gosh you can go anywhere and it’s stunning, beautiful and full of history. Enjoy

waltzingparrot · 14/04/2019 05:08

I would visit every county in England and Wales and then see if you can make a flying visit to northern Ireland and Scotland too. Every county has something amazing and/or beautiful to offer and you would see how this smallish island has so much diversity of landscapes.

ahtellthee · 14/04/2019 05:47

Fish and chips in Whitby. Look up the goth weekends (it's on now) and book in advance. Amazing outfits.

The treehouse at Alnwick Gardens.

Durham cathedral and Beamish museum.

Woolacombe beach in Devon.

Google the Boxing Day dip and see if there is one in your area.

Almahart · 14/04/2019 06:27

Edinburgh
The Northumberland coast (Farne Islands)
Cambridge

Fraxion · 14/04/2019 06:35

Fly to Edinburgh or Glasgow, hire a car and drive the NC500. Absolutely stunning. We did it off season when it was quieter and we got fantastic weather. We have travelled extensively but the scenery of Scotland gets us every time. We are fortunate to live here though so not such a stretch travel wise for us Grin.

SpeckledyHen · 14/04/2019 06:39

Ascot Races - Royal Ascot if you can . Combine it with a trip to Windsor to see the Castle .

SlidingDoor · 14/04/2019 06:42

Peak District - do a high tor walk, also visit Chatswprth which is the most amazing country house and visit Eyam a very pretty village hit by the plague.

Punting - either in oxford or Cambridge. Choose a sunny day. My favourite is to rent from cherwell boat house and punt to the left first until you get to a pub with mooring spots, have a drink then pint back past the boat house to the colleges.

Norfolk - take a walk on the Bach in a drink at a great pub called the Victoria and also go to Burmham market.

Devon - do part of the south west coastal path, visit Dartmouth and Dartmoor. Go to Riverford Field kitchen for lunch. Have a drink at the Rugglestone Inn on the moor.

New Forest - go to beaulieu and hire bikes and cycle down the river to the coast, then go to the Pig pub for lunch.

SlidingDoor · 14/04/2019 06:43

Oh and Bath. Can’t believe I forgot Bath. Stunning city, make sure you go the baths themselves.

SlidingDoor · 14/04/2019 06:44

And mr Norfolk para was meant to say “take a walk on Holkham Beach...”

Aethelthryth · 14/04/2019 06:57

Opera with a picnic at Glyndebourne, Garsington or similar
RSC at Stratford
Evensong at a cathedral or Oxbridge College chapel
Autumn weekend in a cosy country house hotel/pub with rooms
Another vote for punting from the Cherwell Boathouse and Ascot (even if you don't like racing the people watching is fabulous)
Canterbury and Kent villages
Durham (on the way to Whitby)
Wells (combine with Bath)
Pembrokeshire coast; but outside school holidays
Herefordshire- Kilpeck, Brockhampton

If you go anywhere for a Bank holiday weekend, try to take an extra day either side so that you don't have to spend most of your time in a traffic jam/train chaos.

Have a look at the Landmark Trust website for some fantastic quirky places to stay

@Heratnumber7
England? Or do you mean the United Kingdom?

I think the OP is very clear - living in England and looking for bucket list suggestions in the UK. Or are you attempting (and failing) to make an assumption that she’s giving equivalency to the two?

Op i’d Defencourage you to visit Scotland - Edinburgh’s gorgeous. Get a boat out from south queensferry to the islands in the forth. East Lothian for the beaches and about to Bass Rock. Also Northumberland - Bamburgh Castle, Alnwick and the North Yorkshire dales. Whitby, Robin hoods bay, York, Peak District, Chatsworth...

stressedoutpa · 14/04/2019 07:26

Northumberland - Cragside (National Trust), Bamburgh (beach)

BikeRunSki · 14/04/2019 07:30

Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, whatever music floats your boat. Obviously the Proms (and the Last Night) are what it is best known for, but it’s a fabulous place, with amazing acoustics every night!
