... look up there children's mates/mates' parents to check out any past convictions, etc?
Asking for a friend (really!)...

I am aware of an (ex) policeman not only sacked but prosecuted for this. Misuse of the police national computer can carry a hefty prison sentence.

Not to say people may not ask around their colleagues though, ever heard of x? The ‘regulars’ will be well known by all.
