Can anyone tell me about Sylvanian Families?

DD, almost 4 and someone suggested she might like Sylvanian Families for a present. I found a set I was about to buy in TK Maxx then noticed it doesn't come with figures and there was no figures sold separately in store. Not really sure of best one to buy there is a restaurant and department store amongst others.

Anyone know if it's a good idea for this age group and what do I need to get to start off with?

I have seen figures sold separately in Tkmaxx as dd has some, and they’re usually cheaper there than other places. My mum bought dd the cottage and a few families, she spent a fortune (think they were from Argos) and she does love and play with them. The only thing is for the price I wish she’d given her them when she was a bit older, she’s 5 but quite heavy handed. The little bunnies are so cute and a few of them are a bit ragged now Sad

Sylvanians are really cute. My DD got into them around age 4, and sold her colection last year age 11. They are fairly expensive although we got a few bits and bobs on ebay and they do last a long time. I think getting one animal family set and a few accessories would be enough to start. Only thing to be warned though- if you have younger kids the accessories are tiny weeny. When DS was a toddler DD could only play in her room or at his nap time as i was paranoid he would eat the accessories!!

I’d start off with something like the cottage - it’s cheap and cheerful and comes with a few bits to get you started. That way if she isn’t interested you haven’t wasted the (ridiculous amounts of) money on the huge sets.

My daughter loves them but they are bloody expensive. I would suggest looking on eBay and specialist Facebook groups. If she hates them they hold their price really well and you’ll be able to sell them on.
I would start with a small house (cosy cottage or beach wood hall are good) some basic furniture sets and a few characters. The car and caravan are also popular here. See how she likes it and start to build it up from there.

Very expensive and fiddly. I’d go for Playmobil instead if I were you!

DD loves hers. She is 3. Lost alot of the tiny accessories though unsuprisingly.

Have a look at the forestfr1ends page on Facebook, you'll never look at them the same again!

These are ones of the toys that I've kept as I think they have longevity. Kind of makes the expense worth it. Timeless. That's what they are.

My nearly 3 year old loves her starter cottage so I think they’d be perfect for a 4 year old. They were my favourite toys growing up so was hoping my daughter would like them. She is super careful with them though but for now, I’m saying the house has to stay in her bedroom so she doesn’t scatter the pieces everywhere round the house. Also I’d probably put it away at the moment if any of her more heavy-handed friends come to play.

Thanks everyone it's great to hear it sounds like a good choice for that age. I'll get myself down to Smyth's asap :-)
