Kitchen bin recommendations

Boring thread alert but I'm in need of a new kitchen bin and want one of these new fangled things that you can separate recycling as well as general waste.

Don't want anything too wide, and we don't want chrome, as the old bin rusted and never looked that clean.

I've seen a lovely Joseph Joseph bin but it's £200! Hoping Mumsnetters can find a better value equivalent or even convince me that this one is worth the money.

Don't go for the Joesph Joseph one. I have it and unfortunately the design is flawed. The bottom bin holder falls over when emptied and chips the enamel of the bin leaving it looking a right mess.

It's a good idea, but looks rather shit with the chunks taken out of it.

Ignore the eBay one it’s badly damaged

MadSweeney · 12/04/2019 15:16

@Palominoo the marks on the front of the ebay one are exactly what happens to these bins.
Here is mine at 5 months. Not what I'd expect from a £150 product.

I know you said not metal but I have this one. It is also sold under other brands (JL) but dearer.

Can you get bins that are hidden in a cupboard ? Hate bins on show.

livinglongerwithcalgon · 12/04/2019 15:44

Not sure this Brabantia entirely fits your requirements, but it’s one of the few waste sorting bins that has decent capacity (2 x 30 litre) and I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews. They do smaller capacity versions however and smaller versions with three bins instead of two. I like that you can get decent bags that fit properly too.

I don’t have it, I looked into but I have a fair bit of floor space so instead I just have a regular large Brabantia bin (the XXL Touch, which I like a weird amount given it’s just a bin) and a recycling bin (as we have an all-in-one recycling service here so it all just goes into the one bag).

livinglongerwithcalgon · 12/04/2019 15:45

PS the Brabantia comes in other colours, for some reason they’re all separate on the website.

DontCallMeShitley · 12/04/2019 15:52

I have seen the Joseph Joseph ones in Homesense, looked like a good idea but in reality they are crap. (I find a lot of JJ stuff is overpriced and impractical, all for show).

Have you thought about the ones that fit in the under sink cupboard, you don't need to see them?

Oblomov19 · 12/04/2019 15:58

I have a big silver brabantia which I like a lot. Had one for donkeys years, actually never had anything other than a brabantia. I like the look of that new 30 litre separate one, linked. A bit expensive. Wonder if I can find a 2nd hand eBay one?

Starryskiesinthesky · 12/04/2019 16:01

That Brabantia one is lovely 😊

CrazyOldBagLady · 12/04/2019 16:54

Thanks for the advice so far, completely put off the JJ bin now. Can't really have a hidden bin as I don't have much cupboard space as it is.

We have this one - www.dunelm.com/product/simplehuman-30-16-litre-recycler-rectangular-brushed-steel-pedal-bin-1000038606

It’s quite a tragic thing to say about a kitchen bin, but I love it! It fits the space we have for it nicely (we used to have a round one that didn’t work there) and it looks smart. We don’t buy the expensive fitted liners for it, we make do with standard ones.

Starryskiesinthesky · 12/04/2019 17:42

I guess it depends how much recycling you create but 16L wouldnt be nearly enough for us. We fill the 30L in no time.

flowerstar19 · 12/04/2019 19:23

I love my Simple Human bin!

RaiderOfTheKitchenCupboard · 12/04/2019 21:50

@Starryskiesinthesky we probably fill it every couple of days, then empty it into the wheelie bin. We tend to just put smaller things like yoghurt pots and jars in it to save having them piled up on the worktop by the back door (our previous system, it wasn’t good!).

DontCallMeShitley · 14/04/2019 19:32

We have just a plain lift up top bin for the recycling an Addis one, about 50 litres I think. Empty it a couple of times a week into the outside bin.

Next to it is it's baby brother, which is also a lift top one but not as good as the big one, general waste which is about 30/35 litres. Smaller because I don't want kitchen waste hanging about, whereas the recycling is washed out or already clean.

One day I will get new ones, if I ever get a nice kitchen and clear some cupboard space so I can have an undersink one, I have space, in theory, in practice it is full of stuff.

I like a bin with a lift top so it stays open when it is being used.
