How much should double glazing cost?

I’m looking to replace old wood frames on a semi detached, eight windows in total (3 big, 3 medium, 2 small) plus front and back doors. I’ve had the usual “£10k but we have a special offer on today only” quote which makes me not trust a word that they say but I don’t really know how much I should be expecting to pay?

PVC?

Are the doors patio/french/bog standard single? Do you have any strange shaped windows - diamond/round?
Would always recommend getting quotes from local companies and not the big safe style types

Just paid £2700 for a large bay window downstairs, 2 huge windows upstairs and a new composite front door with a local company in South Wales.

We had mock sash windows which put the price up a bit. There was a lot of work.

Original wooden sils were rotting and our aluminium frames were over 20 years old.

Dunraven quoted us over £3000 for a new front and back door (no windows!) Hmm

Yes to bog standard pvc windows, no bays, French doors or anything like that. I was expecting it to cost less than £3500 so £10k quite took me aback!

How much does double glazing cost?

As much as the salesperson thinks they can get away with charging!

Mississippilessly · 11/04/2019 20:57

We had Anglia round to quote for two large sash windows.

They quoted 13k. I nearly died laughing.

KTCluck · 11/04/2019 21:20

We recently paid just over 5k for 4 large windows, 3 small, patio doors, back door and a composite front door. That was a small local company. The price was the price with no ‘special offers’, and they did a brilliant job. The larger, well known window companies all quoted much more.

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 11/04/2019 21:23

Small local company did my my small 3 bed semi for less than £5k two years ago. I got the poshest door, which I think was about a grand of that cost... does that help?

No sales whatsoever. I offered the guy a drink when he measured up which he turned down as he (rightly) pointed out neither of us wanted him to hang around!

We have just had some quotes from 3 small local firms for all windows in a big standard 3 bed semi (11 windows). They ranged from £4500 to £5137.

A neighbour had a safestyle type firm (not sure which one) quote and they said £15k.

TheClaifeCrier · 11/04/2019 21:33

I spent a few months working for a well known double glazing company as an administrator.

They are conmen basically. Over priced products with dodgy sales tactics and their finance package is another way of making it seem like you're getting a bargain but you're actually getting shafted. Never go with a national firm. Always get local recommendations.

Laiste · 11/04/2019 21:38

Have you got someone who can fit them with you/for you? It's much simpler than i thought, but you need a bit of muscle.

We've just bought supply only sliding sash windows online and they were literally about a quarter of the price of supply plus fit. DH and i are half way through fitting them ourselves and it's going well.

IfYoureGonnaTakeAShotAtTheKing · 11/04/2019 21:41

I'd say £4-£5k in that case

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/04/2019 22:48

Who with?

For 4 big, 4 medium, high security front door and standard back door...
Safestyle started the quote at £14k then brought that down to £8k if we were prepared to sign on the dot.

Then we talked to a local firm, who are doing it next week for £5k.

Cherrysoup · 12/04/2019 00:44

£4K or under. We had 7 windows (3 bed semi, some windows already done) replaces a few years ago.

Anglia made me really pissed off: the guy walked in, I asked about replacing 2 old wooden doors with pvc and he immediately said ‘Ooh, minimum £2k’. I could have died! £2k for 2 doors! Hilarious! They harassed me-not joking-persistent calls for months afterwards until I complained to their head office. I told them I’d had all the doors replaced for £500 and they STILL called me! So annoying.
