What is the correct way of using this junction?

It's a one way road, two lanes

The left lane has an arrow on the road showing left & straight
The right lane has an arrow on the road showing right & straight

At busy times if you are in the wrong lane after the light you would struggle to change lane

The lights allow left turn only for some time before they change to green for straight on

So if a car goes in the left lane in order to go straight on they trap all the left lane traffic

& if a bike is going straight on there is no-where for them to sit while the cars turn left

I'm confused & I've avoided it both in a car and on a bike but it would make a journey easier if I understood it

I wouldn't know what to do either! Seems very odd to have a filter light to turn left but the lane is not left turn only.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 11/04/2019 09:47

That's ridiculous lane markings if it's a left turn filter lane!
If the traffic wasn't super busy I'd just use the r.h. lane to go straight on and assume everyone else would also leave the l.h. lane for left turners.

On a bike I'd get to the front and move over in front of the right lane?

Dramatical · 11/04/2019 09:50

Sounds daft, can you do a screenshot on a map?

KatyMac · 11/04/2019 09:59

The google map has the 'old' arrow which was left only

These are the old markings

Sounds like the only way to do it on a bike would be to take the lane and move out into the right hand lane if necessary to go straight over. Which wouldn't be much fun if you're not very assertive, but otherwise you risk getting left hooked? If I was in a car I think I'd just aim for the right hand lane if I was going straight.

KatyMac · 11/04/2019 12:23

& then if you had to move back into the left lane you'd be flattened

On a bike I'd sort of position myself in line with the passenger side wing mirror of a car in the right hand lane, IYSWIM. So if you're going straight across that positions you on the left side of the road anyway, as the junction's a bit of a dog-leg. It doesn't seem like using the left hand lane to go straight across in a car would be a good idea, as you'd be undertaking/cutting up any cars in the right hand lane.

Knittedfairies · 11/04/2019 12:29

That's a junction I would try to avoid!

BiscuitDrama · 11/04/2019 12:32

I’ve had a junction like this near me. In a car I’d go in the right hand lane to go straight on, if it looked like the lights were going to catch me. If it looks like you’re going to get through lights I stay left.
In a bike I’d probably get off and walk like a pedestrian!

amusedbush · 11/04/2019 12:39

I'd probably stay in the right lane to go straight on but I hate things like this. There is a road on my way to work with three lanes: the right to turn right, middle to go straight on and left to go straight or turn left.

People move into the left to go straight on but there are always cars parked on the road after you've passed the junction, so anyone who moved has to brake and try to squeeze back in between the people who used the middle lane.

WeeDangerousSpike · 11/04/2019 12:44

Have they made a mistake when they've redone the markings? I know it sounds daft, but they did near me and gave priority to a non thru road meaning they put a junction on a blind corner Hmm they came out a few days later and changed it back - I assume it was reported by someone

HilaryBriss · 11/04/2019 13:54

Which part of the junction are you referring to? The part at the top (which is the only one I can see with 2 lanes of one way traffic), the left hand lane is clearly marked for left turn only the right lane is marked as you say.

AventaRizon · 11/04/2019 13:56

Hilary as the OP says, the image is of the old markings, not as they are now.

KatyMac · 11/04/2019 15:57

Currently the 'Start line' is equal on both sides with the arrows as I explained in the OP

I can only imagine that's a mistake with road markings

a) the left filter light is the biggest reason
b) the staggered road layout means straight on from the left lane has buildings dead ahead but straight on from the right lane is a road.

What's the point of a left filter lane unless it's exclusively left?
