Tell me I am not the only one rarely getting a good night’s sleep!

I just realised the other day that when I was younger I never really thought about sleep - I just took it for granted that if I went to bed at the right time I would get the sleep that I need.

But now it seems that when I do sleep well, it feels like such a bonus! There seem to be so many things working against me! Sometimes I struggle to get to sleep or wake up for no reason; other times it’s noise (I live in London, so neighbours on all sides, car alarms, etc).

Anyone else feel like that?

Yep, I felt like that. Woke up numerous times a night for no apparent reason. Recently found out I had severe sleep apnea. Got a machine and now I sleep like a log.

My sleep has been totally screwed by being perimenopausal.

I usually go off to sleep OK but it's the waking up during the night (numerous times) and not being able to get back to sleep that's the problem.

At the moment I seem to be restless from 2ish onwards and then wake around 4am for upto 2 hours and awake again 6.30am ( half an hour before my alarm goes off)

Despite living in a relatively quiet area, I’ve slept through the night twice in 17 years. I now take sleeping tablets nightly, and although they help, I still wake numerous times. You are not alone.

Yep, i think I am perimenopausal too! Actually, my GP recently gave me Fluoxetine to lift my mood, but it’s not doing anything good for my sleep. So I am more cheerful but tired!!

My last night of unbroken sleep was in 1995 before I was pregnant with DC1.
Since then I have never slept through. I wake usually 2 or 3 times and go to the bathroom. If I'm lucky I go back to sleep. Often I'm awake 2,3 or 4 hours.

WickedGoodDoge · 10/04/2019 22:02

Yep, peri menopausal here too and for the past three years or so I’ve been on and off going through bad sleeping patches. My latest is that no matter how tired I am or how many times I’ve woken during the night, at 6:00 I’m wide awake and ready to get up. I’ve completely lost the ability to sleep in.

Popskipiekin · 10/04/2019 22:05

Mid 30s, 2 DC. The only time I’ve ever been out like a log was in the first 2-4 weeks post both births when I was so knackered I went out like a light and only woke for baby crying. Now it takes me an hour to get to sleep (at least) and I wake at least twice a night, awake for at least an hour both times. Shattered doesn’t cover it. Ugh. So you’re not alone, but it ain’t a nice place to be! Brew for all of us.

Same here op, I'm in bed for 8 hours most nights and asleep for about 5 of them. I'm deaf as a post all day, can hear an ant fart at night though.

OhMyDarling · 10/04/2019 22:19

My Fitbit tells me I am awake for 2 hours approx each night. I don’t know how accurate it is, but it would explain why I always wake up exhausted and I never remember my dreams- too much time awake and in light sleep so don’t think I get to the dreaming stages.

WhyNotMe40 · 10/04/2019 22:23

I sleep wonderfully when my children permit.
Unfortunately they've all been absolutely awful sleepers and the first 2 only started sleeping through at age 3 and reliably by age 4.
I'm still waiting for child #3 to stop by along me at least 3x per night. He's nearly 3.

There will be no child #4......

I am the same also in Menopause. Was prescribed Sertraline for low mood which has helped me feel better but done absolutely nothing for my sleep. I go to bed and it can take 2 hours to get to sleep and then am always awake at 3am for some reason! Got sleeping tablets prescribed for occasional use. I also sometimes take a Phenergan tablet which does work but makes you feel like you have been run over by a bus in the morning.
