Keeping children sun safe

I’ve gone to buy a sunsafe suit this year for my 4 year old and most of them are short sleeved and short in leg. I thought these were meant to cover more so was wondering what everyone else does? Is this safe enough?

They’re tricky to find but my dc are really fair and burn easily and we go away a lot so I get completely long sleeved and long trousers. Can’t usually get sets so have to mix and match. Places where I’ve had success:

Boden (tho trousers calf length)
Amazon (stingray bottoms)
Polarn o pyret (got really lucky in the sale)
Sunuva on eBay or in their sale for long sleeve tops

U could buy really big size

Yes mine is really fair so I don’t want to risk burning. I burn easily even with factor 50 on!

The parts that they cover are the most vulnerable parts as those parts are covered by clothing nearly all of the time. Forearms and lower legs are exposed when wearing t-shirts, dresses, shorts etc so they are more hardy. A short sleeved and legged suit should be fine.

Most important is a wide brimmed hat. Remember to sunscreen the tops of feet.

Shiverrrrmetimbers · 10/04/2019 20:50

@savoycabbage that kind of makes sense but my daughter would never sit in the sun as she’s so fair - we’re always in the shade. However, when she plays in the pool she’s 100% in the sun for hours on end which makes me want to err on the safe side

Keeping a hat on her is another story!!

She wouldn't have to be sitting in the sun for her skin to get used to being in the sun. Just walking around living her normal life will do that.

You could try a hat with a strap to try and keep it on.

Boots do longer sleeves & legs, also mothercare

Thanks I never knew Boots did clothing! The Mothercare range is woeful - all Peppa Pig and giant frills for girls.

For anyone else looking I’ve found a couple at John Lewis and Nexf

I think you have to just not be out in the sun for hours on end when its super hot unfortunately.

Ie: for your example with the swimming pool for hours, I just wouldn't do that during the peak heat of the day. A quick 20 mins in the pool at a time with suncream on in the middle of the day. And they get a longer time in the pool either earlier in the morning or late afternoon when the sun isn't as strong. In warm countries its still lovely and warm at 5-7pm for a swim, but the sun isn't quite as strong.

We are on hol at moment scorcher mid 30's

Dd has lived in her long sleeve and below knee swimmers and long sleeve cotton kaftan tops.

She's not wearing hardly any of her beautiful clothes as her fair skin is literally frazzling

MarthasGinYard · 11/04/2019 09:52

Mini Boden also do them

needsleepzzz · 11/04/2019 09:54

The ones i have are cropped length, i just suncream the exposed bits every hour or 2 depending where we are, she is very fair and has not burned yet. We told her if she wants to go in the pool she must wear a hat no, hat no pool, did the trick :-)

Shiverrrrmetimbers · 11/04/2019 13:26

@walteriris that’s not very practical though on a pool/ beach holiday. What would you do between 11-5 every day! Also she eats at 5:30 and is asleep by 7 so evening swims wouldn’t work.

I do understand the need to not just be in the sun and she has plenty of shade breaks during the day but it’s not possible to only limit her swim time to before 11 or after 5
