Help - superglue nightmare!

cherryontop80 · 10/04/2019 16:33

So yesterday I broke a ceramic vase. Thing is it belonged to my DH dearly departed mum (RIP) and has huge sentimental value.

After a good few mins of hysteria I went and bought some superglue hoping I could glue it and it be ok.

All good - or so I thought. Glued it back together today but did really shite job (despite concentrating/sweat dripping etc) the edges of the break don't join up and it looks horrific! Xx Sad

Have tried soaking in warm water and also the acetone thing but it's stuck fast!

Am freaking out! Haven't told DH yet and don't really want to have to!

Any tips! Xx

Acetone nail varnish remover dissolves superglue but do a patch test in case it takes any paint off.

Sorry missed the bit about acetone!

You need to bite the bullet and take it to a specialized porcelain restorer. It's won't be cheap but it you have all the bits it will be as good as new.

Very hot soapy water will do the trick eventually. Keep topping up the hot and add a good couple of squirts of dish soap.

I believe you can get a dissolver product that is made for this sort of thing. If you decide to give it another go make sure the pieces are completely dry and clean and only do a couple of pieces at a time and wait until completely dry. Then move on. It has to be a slow job I'm afraid and you'll have to fess up I suspect. If you want him to never know then a professional restoration might do the job but it depends how bad the damage is. Good luck.

Look for a replacement on Ebay!
Can you not use superglue remover?
Always a good idea to by glue remover along with the glue. I accidentally superglued my finger to a Disney crown once, but thankfully had a tube of remover in the drawer.

Soaking in Dettol (if you can stand the smell) will dissolve superglue. You need a proper restorer to sort this.

No solution but a funny tale to tell.
When I met now exh he had been previously married. Full of how it was an amicable split and she would never swindle him out of any finance due off the sale of marital home etc. Marital home was only in her name as he was a financial disaster and couldn't get a mortgage. Drove past one day and rubbish bin was overflowing with empty purchases boxes. TV, washer etc. Loads of stuff obviously been bought recently. He knocked on the door and asked for exw....
The new home owner explained she had just bought the house off exw.
He had been legitimately fleeced. No paperwork has been drawn up to stake any claims.
She shipped all his posh china to him though.
Every single item had had its head knocked off and super glued on.
Back to front.

Bloody genius!!
