Pulled pork - is it this simple?

Tried it at a conference and really liked it so thought I'd give it a go. Is this all there is to preparing it?

  1. Put boneless pork shoulder as is (minus wrapping of course) in the slow cooker just on its own, on low for 8 hours.
  2. Remove and cut all the fat away.
  3. Put it back in the slow cooker and pull it apart with a fork.
  4. Pour in some Heinz BBQ sauce and stir it in.
  5. Cook it on low for one more hour.

Have I missed anything?
Cooking is not my strong point and this seems too simple and like I've missed something. Thanks

Pretty much :)

If you like I make my own barbecue sauce (works on ribs /chicken legs etc) - just mix and stir in

2 tsp Worcester sauce
2 tsp soya sauce
2 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp whole grain mustard
2 tbsp fruit sauce (I use jam or fruit chutneys)
4 tbsp tomato ketchup

Yep. I remove the fat first, and put a rub on the pork as well, but yeah, that's it!

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 10/04/2019 08:21

Yep! You can put a rub or marinade on first if you want.

Also nice without the bbq sauce. We have it in buns with apple sauce, stuffing and gravy. I take the fat off and turn it in to crackling 🤤

This is the recipe I use. I don't add the bbq sauce but put it on the table with the apple sauce for people to add themselves. Really easy and yummy.

Yes, that simple, can also use oven on low, I cook a large shoulder in the oven and freeze portions

bruffin · 10/04/2019 08:32

I wouldnt remove the fat , it would be too dry.
I rub with some sugar, spices and add a some onions and stock to pan
Then use bbq sauce when cooked

Do NOT remove the fat layer. The meat will be far to dry without it. Just make sure you put the pork shoulder in the slow cooker with the fat on top. That way the juices run down and baste the pork during cooking.

bruffin · 10/04/2019 12:20

cross posted, I use the chow hound recipe as well Grin

Vegisgrowingwell · 10/04/2019 12:55

I made the mistake of taking the fat off before cooking once, the meat was dry, much better to take it off after

gingajewel · 10/04/2019 14:57

It’s really good in the slow cooker with pork shoulder.

NewFoneWhoDis · 10/04/2019 15:16

I use an overnight rub then dish up on either baps or wraps with coleslaw, gherkins, & cheese.

rosydreams · 10/04/2019 15:18

remove fat way to dry i always cook mine in 250ml chicken stock and a onion .After 8-10hrs remove the lot return meat without fat and some of the juices to keep moist. Then serve in rolls with favorite sauce or gravy

Troels · 10/04/2019 15:18

I remove the fat, smoother it with BBQ sauce in the slow cooker and put in on low for 8 hours or more, then it falls apart with a fork.
Shove it inside big crunchy rolls, and feed a load of teenagers.

Defender90 · 10/04/2019 16:04

I make a rub up with muscovado sugar and smoked paprika, rub it all over and stick some garlic cloves in as well.

I keep some of the rub back and do it again once I've shredded it, quick blast in the oven again and then dish up.

Adds pork joint to shopping list

Mix up honey, some ketchup, smoked paprika, BBQ seasoning, apple cider vinegar and water and put in the slow cooker with the pork. Leave the fat on.

After 8 hours remove the pork, remove the fat and shred the pork with 2 forks. Put the liquid in a saucepan and reduce right down - makes the best sauce! Then just recombine the two.

wowfudge · 10/04/2019 16:23

I cook mine it in my Instant Pot. Cut skin off. Dry rub with spices, garlic, etc., leave for several hours. Brown the meat, add liquid - can be stock, cider, etc. pressure cook for 20mins per lb.
