On crutches, how do I shower and should my cast be this loose?

I've ordered a cast waterproof cover.

But I'm not confident about getting in and out the shower. I'm non weight bearing. There's a step in the shower frame to get over to get into the shower. While I can manage steps normally the bottom of the shower is really slippy. I tried putting a crutch on the shower bottom yesterday and it skidded away. There's no way I'd dare do it with me having my weight on the crutch as well. I was going to order a shower stool but I still wouldn't be an,e to get in and out?

Also this is the first time with a cast. I haven't broken my leg so there shouldn't be any swelling but the cast feels looser today than yesterday. I can move my foot around a bit which I don't think I could yesterday and if I tug on the cast I can move the whole thing up and down a couple of cm. the cast is meant to be keeping my foot inverted at a certain angle and I'm not sure it is.....but maybe this is the best they can do. I guess it can't be too tight?

I also just found this picture online where they seem to have rigged something up on the basket to hold the crutches. It would probably be easy enough to replicate if you know someone with a sewing machine!

It's my distal fibula which is damaged. I think they're going to just keep me in a below the knee cast. They would have been happy with a walking boot for the fibula damage but I've got a subluxating tendon as well so decided on the cast as my foot can be inverted while immobile.

Haven't read everyone's comments, but can offer a bit of advice..

I lost my leg and had to use crutches for five years. Two years with my leg amputated, so just one leg and crutches. You will soon get very use to them, and will have lovely defined, toned arms after a short while!! so just think of that positive, while your cursing your crutches with every move you try and make Grin

I had to have a full leg cast on permanently for 18 months, before my leg was amputated. No water proofed cast covers I tried, done the job!!
I had to go rogue and put a bin bag over my cast, and tape the top sealing it!!

Much cheaper and my cast was completely dry afterwards! If you do have a bath, I would recommend a bath!! Keeping your cast still covered (just in case) but keeping your leg out of the bath.

Crutches are so so slippy on wet floors, so plenty of bath mats covering your bathroom floor aswell, to make sure you don't slip!!

Oh gosh I will not moan about having to use crutches for a few weeks! Puts it into perspective LittleMiss having to use crutches for five years! I hope you have a good prosthetic now?

Can you look to either buy, hire or borrow a Zimmer frame for a few weeks? They're not as "young" as crutches but so much easier to use (and you can tie a bag to the frame to carry smaller things with you)

Didn't break any bones, but pulled tendons/ligaments in my right leg and couldn't put any weight on my leg for a few weeks, I used crutches with pipe insulating foam on the handles, and the trolly to get around the house and carry stuff.

@NicoAndTheNiners You have every right to moan!! Crutches are an absolute nightmare! Just because someone may seem to be in a worse position than you, doesn't mean the position your in still isn't a pain! I moaned all the time, but I still seen people in hospital a heck of a lot worse off than me!

Have you managed to find a way to solve the issue? A positive will be the day the cast comes off..your first shower will be like heaven..just keep thinking of that Smile

And yes thank god I have a great new leg now Grin

A friend is taking me to the gym tonight as the showers don't have a step. So as long as my crutches aren't too slippy on the wet tiles I think I can have a shower. If not then work has a disabled wet room and I will shower there tomorrow.

Am working from home today but tomorrow will be my first commute in to work. Am not looking forward to it!

I managed to make eggs on toast for lunch and hop from the kitchen into the dining room carrying a plate. I'm really good at hopping! Grin

DH had a nearly full leg cast not long ago and what worked best for him was wrapping his leg in cling film (a lot of it)
Or using one of those plastic covers that dry cleaning comes in. There are holes in the top and bottom so they tuck inside the cast. And using one crutch in the shower for balance.
