Looking for ideas in the city, and also a day trip by train within an hour or two away (pref near Linz) that teens and toddlers will enjoy. Last minute trip with teens to see friends. Help please!

I think the Schloss Hellbrunn trick fountains have just opened. They’re a lot of fun, but you will get wet so best to go on a warm day. It’s a short bus ride away from Salzburg centre. The Salzburg Zoo is next door too.

There’s a science museum and a natural history museum in the city centre. Neither are great, but they might keep the kids entertained for an hour.

Depending on how old the teens are and whether they can explore on their own, they might like to get the cable car up the Untersberg mountain, and then you can climb the 20 minutes or so to the peak. It’s about a half-hour bus ride away though.

Hangar-77 has lots of racing cars and planes on display. I’ve never been myself so not sure how interactive it is, but might be worth looking into it.

Maybe the salt mines too. Again, I’ve never been but they’re billed as a family attraction and the Hallein one is next to a Celtic village, with entry included with the ticket price.

I’m not sure if any of that is useful for you. I visit either alone or with my partner so I’m not really looking out for family-friendly attractions, but Salzburg is my specialist subject Grin

The salt mines are worth a visit

The salt mine in Bad Durrnberg (near Hallein) have been mentioned. You could combine it with a visit to the Rodelbahn also in Bad D. It’s always been billed as the longest in Austria. It’s brilliant according to DH, DS and DDIL. Speed scares the socks off me so I come down on the chair lift.

The fountains were huge fun. We bought a Salzburg card and got very good value. The day of the fountains we caught a bus to a cable car and went up, had an incredible walk in the mountains then hot chocolate afterwards before going to Helbrunn on the way back. Did house and fountains and waltzed around Lisls summer house (which was disappointing - I thought they’d be more tacky sound of music).
We did a Castle accessed by furnicular, the amazing palace that took hours to go around but which looked relatively unimposing.
We did Mozart’s house and went to a concert. Pretty special listening to music in the room the composer himself had played in. That would depend on the teenagers. It was in a palace in a park.
We did museum of modern art but were underwhelmed.
Rodelbahn has to be done. It’s a definite bucket lister.

And if the family is interested in boats you can do a tourist boat trip on the river. And a bit further afield, the Austrian lakes - a great boat trip from St Gilgen to St Wolfgang (of White Horse Inn fame - it’s still there) or on Mondsee (the church in the town there was where the exterior of the Sound of Music wedding was filmed).

And if teens are studying WW2 at school then Berchtesgaden, Obersalzberg and Kehlstein is a must (c. 16 miles away - great public transport)

Thank you everyone! Plenty there to go on. I'm very grateful for your help! x
