Heathrow neatest airport.
It's not in central London, it's just off the M25 so I'm not sure what links there are to other things to do. Not sure about accommodations either!

30 mins by car!

The closest airport is Luton, then Heathrow.

Watford has a Premier Inn, Travelodge, Jury's Inn etc. Or The Grove at the other end of the scale.

Depending how long you are staying, you could take the train into London the next morning and visit the Natural History Museum or similar.

Warner Brothers run a dedicated bus from Watford Junction station; it possibly stops elsewhere too.

We've got tickets and nearby hotels for the studio tour with Superbreaks, even last minute during the popular festive tours.

Honeyroar · 09/04/2019 22:30

(Think that we stayed at Jury's Inn in Watford, which was very nice)

littleblackno · 09/04/2019 22:37

I took the kids a few years ago. Stayed near Euston station and got the train to Watford. Then spent a couple of days sightseeing in London.
Harry Potter is well worth a trip and is more than a full day worth.

Littlepond · 09/04/2019 22:40

Jury’s Inn in Watford is lovely. Highly recommend!

GottenGottenGotten · 09/04/2019 22:57

Closet airport - possibly Narnia?
I've never considered Heathrow particularly neat... It's fairly spread out iirc

(Sorry, I'll get coat)

wendz86 · 09/04/2019 23:03

There’s a nice country park quite near called aldenham that has a farm and Winnie the Pooh trail .

TheFirstOHN · 09/04/2019 23:06

Heathrow airport is a vast dystopian sprawl that seems to be designed to make it as difficult as possible for an occasionally visiting driver to find where they need to be. Last time I tried to pick someone up from there I ended up in a private carpark for minicab drivers, having a panic attack.

Luton airport is not beautiful, but at least I can find the correct car park.

BikeRunSki · 09/04/2019 23:06

We stayed at St Albans’ Premier Inn and ate at The Waffle House in a nearby park.

TheFirstOHN · 09/04/2019 23:09

Yes, Aldenham Country Park would be ideal for a five year old (on a dry day). The rare breeds farm is small but interesting and the Hundred Acre Wood is aimed at that age group.

Alternatively, Willows Farm (larger, has soft play area) is not too far away.

Totaldogsbody · 09/04/2019 23:14

Luton is nearest airport. Would go into London next day, lots to do science museum, visit the palace, the parks etc

Totaldogsbody · 09/04/2019 23:16

Don't know if you've booked your ticket for Harry Potter or not but we went a few years ago and could only get in during our time slot.

SnapesGreasyHair · 09/04/2019 23:29

Watford....my home town.

Not much nearby to do. Would need transport to go anywhere.

St Albans has a large park and there's one in Watford called Cassiobury

WearsABlackAndLongCoatWrong · 09/04/2019 23:56

I don't mean this in a nasty way, but the HP tour would be incredibly boring for a 5 yr old, and it's in the arse-end-of-nowhere.

{sorry to people who live near J19 of the M25, but there is a grain of truth here!}

Usuallyinthemiddle · 10/04/2019 00:00

It's quite a grown up experience (in as much as a wizard film set can be! 🙄) My 6 year old would be bored quite quickly.

TheFirstOHN · 10/04/2019 00:02

WearsABlackAndLongCoatWrong
It's junction 20.

Junction 19 is actually a hip and happening place. There's a watercress farm, and they've even built a new old people's home. Grin

TheFirstOHN puts pistol to own forehead Grin

AHEM! Of COURSE I knew that. Just to say it would've been too outing!

TheFirstOHN · 10/04/2019 00:08

🤣

cloudymelonade · 10/04/2019 00:15

Are you going for yourself or for your 5 year old? It will be a very very boring place for a 5 year old

BikeRunSki · 10/04/2019 06:33

Has your child seen the films OP? It is completely pointless going to the studio if he hasn’t. It’s basically the sets, scenery and props from the films, nothing else. No rides or games etc. It’s a lot of walking too.

IggyAce · 10/04/2019 06:48

We have booked for later this year, we are staying in a premier inn in Luton and plan on getting the train from there into London for a day and visit HP studio on the following morning. Total surprise for my dcs 12 and 8, dc1 has been Harry Potter mad for a few years but have waited to visit so that dc2 enjoys it too.

Glittertwins · 10/04/2019 07:17

You'll need a car to get around anywhere else if you aren't heading back into London. We live pretty close but to get out to Williws Farm (back end of St Albans) or Aldenham, you'll need a car. Willows Farm is also quite expensive for a family day ticket.

Fairylea · 10/04/2019 07:20

It is in the middle of nowhere. We nearly got lost driving to it- I nearly took the wrong turn coming off the motorway and it wasn’t very well signposted when we went! We had a good time but being honest unless you’re a mega mega super fan it was a lot of money for what it was, dh and I enjoyed it more than the dc.
