In my garden I have an old dinghy. I promise you it looks nice! Last year I put 4 gro bags in it and grew tomatoes very successfully. This year I want to do something different. If I put several packets of nasturtium seeds into the old gro bags will I end up with a dinghy full
of Nasturtiums? Or isn’t it that simple? It has to be simple- I have black fingers when it comes to plants.

It gets full sun, has very little shelter.

Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention,Grin occasionally floods with brackish estuary water........

Sorry do not know about water from estuary.

Weezy7 · 09/04/2019 13:55

Nasturtiums will grow like mad, but are plagued with cabbage white caterpillars which can decimate them quite quickly. Also loved by aphids. Personally I'd go with the wildflower mix as mentioned before. You'll always have something new coming through and is wonderful for the nature. Much more interesting throughout the year.

Talk about drip feed @Bertrand ! Grin
Maybe they will float in the dinghy .

DontCallMeCharlotte · 09/04/2019 14:44

occasionally floods with brackish estuary water

Even better for lavender.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 09/04/2019 14:45

Well maybe not actual flooding. But it's like cats - prefers manky water to pure straight from the tap water.

IncrediblySadToo · 09/04/2019 14:47

Lavender is nasty.

No useful advice, but it sounds pretty.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 09/04/2019 15:06

You could try poached egg plants as well if you fancy branching out (pun intended Grin)

BertrandRussell · 09/04/2019 16:59

I’ve just found a packet of Morning Glory-might chuck that in too.......

I’ve had a thought, oh helpful gardeners. Could I turn it into a herb garden instead? And if so, are there any herbs that thrive on neglect and incompetence?

OP posts:
DontCallMeCharlotte · 13/04/2019 09:50

Bloody rosemary.

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2019 09:54

Ah. I killed an established rosemary bush last year......

OP posts:
DontCallMeCharlotte · 13/04/2019 10:35

Can you come and kill mine please?

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2019 10:39

I can probably do it remotely....

Poached egg are great self seed and pop up EVERYWHERE general neglect appreciated!

Nasturtiums sound good too - just get a bottle of plant foot to go in water and that every 6 weeks ish - should be plenty to grow madly

downcasteyes · 13/04/2019 10:42

Nasturtiums go with herbs - the flowers and leaves are edible. They have a slightly peppery taste.

Mediterraneam herbs will thrive in full sun, particularly in well-drained soil. Things like rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano. Avoid basil - it likes water.

Is the estuary water that floods your garden salty? If so, that is quite a big problem!

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2019 10:48

So could I plant nasturtiums and herbs together in my boat?

OP posts:
downcasteyes · 13/04/2019 11:01

Yes, it'll look lovely.

blueirises · 13/04/2019 11:15

Ooh, ooh, please put the morning glory seeds in as well! It'll look like road and railway sides in Portugal, nasturtiums and morning glory all together.

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2019 11:30

OK! I’m doing to order some herb plants today- and “construct” on Tuesday. Watch this space! All further advice and suggestions gratefully received.
