Son just been sick!

Hi all, my son was sick about 50 minutes ago... I'm a huge emetophobe and I'm really struggling with this as I am alone with him. I need talking down... he has been absolutely fine all day, eaten well, running round etc but has a runny nose and a slight cough. The vomit itself was preceded by a few little coughs, and was chunks of undigested grape and clear liquid. Didn't smell like sick if you know what I mean... just now panicking that it's a bug and me and DH will get it too... does it sound like a bug to you or something else? He says he feels fine now... thanks all, I hate that I feel like this as a grown adult Sad

My ds has coughed and made himself sick a couple of times, especially if his tummy is full. It's always been a one off. He doesn't sound at all ill so I'm sure you're fine.

Ignore the ignorant opening post, there's always one!

ignore Toto
fellow emmetophobia here too.
I complelty understand I have thought everything you are.
I don't think it sounds like a bug really.
hope you are both ok.
you will get through this even if it's a bug

BiggerBoat1 · 08/04/2019 16:21

Doesn't sound like a bug. Coughs can often cause children to be a bit sick. If he seems generally well then hopefully it was a ne off.

Try not to worry.

Oh, and ignore the first reply you got! Some people just aren't very nice.

CommunistLegoBloc · 08/04/2019 16:22

Shut up Totoro.

OP, it does sound like he was a bit full and choked up some food before it had even begun digesting. Happens sometimes.

Just be rigorous with your hand washing and perhaps put some towels down where he’s playing or in his bed so that clean up (if needed) is simpler.

MyKingdomForBrie · 08/04/2019 16:22

It's called a phobia toto, have some compassion. There's nothing in the OP to suggest she wasn't supporting him, just that she was miserable about it.

Harumff · 08/04/2019 16:22

Toto you have no idea what you are talking about - emetophobia is a serious mental illness that can completely take over your life. I know from personal experience how awful this is to deal with.

Op this doesn’t sound like a bug to me but no matter what we say you will stress and count the days.... just take deep breaths, occupy yourself and take it five minutes at a time. This too shall pass.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/04/2019 16:22

Get a bowl and line it with a plastic carrier bag and put some kitchen roll in the bottom - if he's sick again you can just tie the top and straight out into the bin.

Tbh there's but a lot else you can do except try and keep calm and comfort him, although he sounds like he's ok.

Oh fuck off.

PoliticalBiscuit · 08/04/2019 16:45

Reported those posts. Honestly- it's a really difficult decision. I don't know that it is a bug but you should definitely treat it like it is. Lots of kitchen roll, cleaning wipes, anti bac spray and hand gel. The tip about carrier bags lined with kitchen roll in a washing up bowl was great. Everything can be bleached after.

You'll be ok and your son will be too. As best as you can get, do what you need to do to cope so that you can still do what care is needed.

PoliticalBiscuit · 08/04/2019 16:45

Sorry difficult condition I meant not difficult decision Flowers

SheChoseDown · 08/04/2019 16:49

Toto you nasty human. OP please ignore them.
I suffered terribly from emetophobia for most of my life, only in the past 3 years have I been able to get more of a handle on it. Its life debilitating and absolutely NOTHING like being afraid of a spider. People are so quick to harp on about 'understanding mental health, raising awareness of mental health issues'..... Well this is one that is highly misunderstood.

How old is your son? I'm sure you have cleaning products to hand.
Here's some nice things to know....

  1. I have never caught a bug from a child. I worked in a childcare setting for 9 yrs!
  2. It's short term. Get through each hour. Distract yourself with cleaning and watching TV.
  3. DO NOT Google. It won't make y9feel better.

Is your husband understanding?

PoliticalBiscuit · 08/04/2019 16:51

How is it different than a spider phobia @SheChoseDown ? Genuine question from a place of interest not argument!

dontticklethetoad · 08/04/2019 16:55

SheChoseDown I think if you're afraid of spiders then it is exactly the same Hmm

That is a great tip re the bowl/bag/kitchen paper. Thanks DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen !

twosoups1972 · 08/04/2019 17:04

Massive sympathy OP, another emetophobe here. My 12 year old dd had a sickness bug about 10 days ago, dh was at work and it was hell for me. I cleaned throughly with gloves, used bleach, disposable cloths etc, kept her bathroom separate etc. I was really scared we would catch it too but we didn't.

golddigga · 08/04/2019 17:08

Thanks all for your support. I do feel ridiculous about how I feel, and hate the fact that I do feel like this. To make it clear I absolutely did not neglect the care of my child. I cleaned him up, cuddled him, and am currently snuggled under a blanket with him. I am able to message on Mumsnet while cuddling and snuggling. It must be nice @TotorosLeafUmbrella to be so perfect that you have no fears and no phobias. Thanks for your thoughts, but suffice to say that opinions from people like you matter very little to the rest of the human race.

OP posts:
golddigga · 08/04/2019 17:17

He's flipping starving now too... was only sick the once so far, and although tired seems fine fingers crossed so he's eating some dry crackers... if that stays in I shall be a happier bunny

OP posts:
ButtMuncher · 08/04/2019 17:21

Don't worry OP - I'm a fellow emetephobe. It does sound like maybe he caught gag reflex when coughing, if he had proper chucked up you'd expect to find all sorts in there.

It's horrible but you've dealt with it brilliantly. Thanks
