going veggie at 50+?

it's all a it weird, this getting older malarkey! For me, anyway.

I've gone off alcohol, quite a shift from a glass or three most nights and for the best part of 20 years or so to, quite literally, nothing. I can't bear the thought of it - I just watch my partner pouring himself a glass and it no longer appeals. This is a positive thing. I did read the Jason Vale book - either consciously or subconsciously as a move to not drinking alcohol anymore. I'm embracing this. This is a good thing.

The weird thing for me though is food - I've gone off of meat - in any shape or form. Don't fancy it at all. On occasions where I've thought I'd go for a chili or chicken curry I tend to just eat the rice and juice and leave the meat entirely. The thought of stripping up a left over chicken carcass really turns my stomach whereas it never used to bother me.

Maybe is my subconscious... Im fully aware I have several stone to lose and seriously need to factor in exercise daily to try and shift some weight. I'm also thinking daily yoga is the way to go, in a bid to ease aching joints and wotnot.

So I think I need some nutritious veggie meal ideas...

Also would be interested in hearing of others who have undergone such a radical subconscious change in their 50s.

interesting - I'm nearly 51. Not quite as drastic, but in the last couple of years, I have completely gone off prawns (used to love them). Its not an allergy or the taste, more the feel of them in my mouth Envy < (not envy)

brings to mind this Victoria Wood quote "Never touch prawns. Do you know they hang around sewage outlet pipes, treading water with their mouths open? They love it!" Grin

also I have stopped taking sugar in my tea - used to have one big spoon, suddenly tasted awful so I have it without now.

And yes, since earlier this year (after getting shingles, actually), my taste buds for alcohol have gone really weird - I haven't been able to drink red wine for about 8 years, but now some white wines just taste disgusting.

A vegetarian diet is maybe my next step too!

I’m almost 53 but have been a vegetarian for nearly 24 years and I’ve hardly ever drank alcohol.

I’ve always had a sweet tooth but as I’ve got older it has for sightylybless. I’ve never really been interested in crisps, but I now love a Kettle cheese and onion!

I wonder if our taste buds change as we get older.

I guess it's our bodies adjusting to what they need?

Interesting, as I'm 50 and over the last year I've dropped alcohol, just gone off it and hadn't had any for the best part of the year apart from a couple of glasses of wine on my birthday last week (but that felt like tradition rather than "oh I really fancy a glass" iykwim) and I've adopted a more vegetarian diet too. I look at meat on the plate and think about it and just can't bring myself to eat it.

I still eat a fair bit of chocolate though! Grin

Se7en11 · 08/04/2019 07:52

ahhh well, yes, chocolate Grin
but then that doesnt appeal so much these days.... not the twix bounty Mars etc anyway.... Im moving tiwards the higher quality stuff and notice that I don't have that crave for more that I do after a KitKat etc

I am the same. Almost 60 and rarely eat meat....although a bit of lamb shoulder still appeals!
I have recently started weights at the gym and feel so much better....dropped a dress size, metabolic age reduced by 17 years and bmi down. I am much more aware of what I put in my mouth.
I have lost my sweet tooth...so no cakes, chocolate and desserts....And I am with you...I have gone off wine. Prefer a sharp g and t.
