If my 12 year old dd likes the film Mean Girls can anyone suggest any other films she might enjoy ?

Clueless? cant remember the age rating but its pretty tame from what I remember!

CharminglyGawky · 07/04/2019 23:28

Legally blonde
10 things I hate about you

Were both films I watched at a similar time to mean girls. Not sure that 10 things I hate about you has aged well, but as I can only remember the singing scene I'm not sure!

Bring it on.

Just seen that The Duff is included in Amazon prime so will definitely watch that one - looks quite good.

Edge of Seventeen is sweary but very good.

Adventures in Babysitting is very 80s but a clever adaptation of the Oddessy.

Beyond cinema and into TV, she must be introduced to Buffy and Veronica Mars.

Off the top of my head:

  • Agree with the Buffy comments above; also what about something like Charmed or Once upon a Time (the last one is definitely very family friendly, it's a long time since I've watched Charmed though so am not sure on that one)?
  • if she doesn't mind a bit of fantasy/humour, what about Ella Enchanted and the series of fairytale adapations that came out a few years ago of Snow White, Ever After etc.
  • And if she doesn't mind a bit of Retro, then A League of Their Own, How to Make an American Quilt, Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, Steel Magnolias, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
  • Agree on the "10 Things I Hate About You" - mild sex references but nothing too over-the-top in there; similar films include She's All That, Clueless. The John Hughes films might be slightly too old for her at this point and some of them have not aged well.
  • Or some docufilms, about, for instance, Helen Keller, there's one called Hidden Figures which is about African-American women at NASA, there's a recent one about Malala

www.commonsensemedia.org/reviews is a good site to have a look at.

"Eighth Grade" is in cinemas now. It is sort of Edge of Seventeen's little sister. Have not seen but it has very good rite-ups.

Would also recommend Girl-Flu, a very good take on the teen-girl puberty blues theme.

Dd has enjoyed

Warehouse 13
The meg
The shallows
Hunger games

Ivegotthree · 10/04/2019 09:43

Dumplin

Hello1290 · 10/04/2019 23:40

Lots more suggestions that I think she may like :)

Legally blonde def. All my dc liked it (10,10,13).
Dumplin. On Netflix. Dd aged 10 enjoyed. It's OK.
Bit different but my kids also love O Brother Where Art Thou?

marigoldsmarigolds · 11/04/2019 00:01

13 going on 30
Seventeen again
The Parent Trap
Monte Carlo
All are pretty harmless and quite cute - no prizes for role models but light entertainment!
High School Musical (that's just for me 😬)
Mine also loved Hidden Figures, which is a great film. They like Stand By Me, Ferris Beullers Day off, Fried Green Tomatoes, What's eating Gilbert Grape - eighties classics.
Devil Wears Pravda, The Intern, The Dressmaker, and one that might be a bit suspect in parts but is funny if you like that kind of thing is the Internship with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughan in.
Watching films is a big pastime in our house 😊
