Sunday Dinner/Lunch... (lighthearted, this isn't AIBU)

Do you have a full roast? At 2pm like a normal human being or later?

My ideal is full roast, spuds (preferably two types or one and roast parsnips), at least three types of veggies including something from the cabbage family, something green and one other (carrots, swede, etc) and a bucketload of thick gravy, followed by a proper baked pudding or homemade cakes around teatime.

DP doesn't think like this. He has previously suggested that, with Christmas falling midweek, it wasn't necessary to have a roast dinner for the two Sundays previously and would, in all honesty, be happy with a packet of crisps and a Pot Noodle during the day and a slice of pizza late in the evening. He has still cooked them (he insists on monopolising the kitchen and shopping), but they've been somewhat hit and miss and the time has slipped from 6pm to 'it'll be ready soon' at 10.45pm last week at which point I lost my fucking shit at him.

Anyway, obviously remembering last week's shit fit, he is just about making gravy now. Which is good. It feels right. And saves me from staging a chickenwing coup with the TwatCats and forcibly occupying the kitchen in order to cook.

What are your opinions on food on Sundays?

Should there be a large breakfast, then dinner by 2, then tea?

Are you more of a heathen monster pizza and chips person?

Is it 6pm? 8pm?

How many veggies/types of potatoes?

Or is Sunday Dinner not a thing anymore?

We don't always have a roast - today we're having homity pie, sometimes we'll have a casserole or prosciutto wrapped philly stuffed chicken breasts etc. Depends on what we're in the mood for really.

TurnOffTheTv · 07/04/2019 14:23

Large breakfast/brunch 11am
Bracing walk
Full roast 4pm
Something with custard at 6/7pm with TV

PinkHeart5914 · 07/04/2019 14:24

Breakfast whenever we get up, Today we had pancakes and maple syrup about 8am

Lunch was 1pm bacon sandwich

Dinner is chilli and rice (dc will eat at 5pm, me and dh about 8pm)

I don’t like eating a huge meal in the middle of the day as it makes me sluggish

No we don’t have a roast every week, only 1 Sunday a month and we eat it in the evening at 6pm

A roast should however always have roasties, cauliflower cheese, carrots and broccoli

Chicken or beef
Yorkshire puddings
Roast potato
Mash
Roasted carrots and parsnips in honey
Stuffing if we have chicken
Broccoli cabbage
Gravy

We have brunch around midday so we definitely don't want a full roast at 2! I usually aim for half seven, but it tends to be after 8 / nearer to 9 by the time it's ready.

chocolateavocado99 · 07/04/2019 14:26

I would be quite happy to never have a roast dinner again. I just do not get the appeal!
Dh and dcs do not agree, so dh makes one when he is in the mood. I wash up.
Unfortunately I will have to eat one when I go back to England for the summer.

OKBobble · 07/04/2019 14:27

If we have one we have it about 7pm on a Sunday.

FiveLittlePigs · 07/04/2019 14:29

Sunday lunch is always a lunch ie soup/sandwiches never a full meal.

Sunday roast about 7pm with dessert. Then flop into the sofa and chill.

CremeEggThief · 07/04/2019 14:31

I love a vegetarian Sunday roast, with either nut roast (ready made) or Quorn roast, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, broccoli or cabbage, stuffing or Yorkshire puddings (ready made) and gravy (Bisto). We only have it about once a month though, between October and April. Any time between 3 and 7 pm. I would like to have it about 2, sometimes, but this only happens when we go out for it, as neither DS nor I are ever up much before 11 on Sundays.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 07/04/2019 14:31

Not fussed for a roast so rarely have one.

Breakfast c. 7.30 then out to activities
Lunch c.12.30 pizza or soup and salad or sandwich or full English
Dinner all together c. 6 something proper but not a roast: stew, lasagne etc

Jinglejanglefish · 07/04/2019 14:32

Would usually have it as an early dinner around 6, but not every week, I don't think we do anything that religiously.

If we're going out to the pub then it would be lunch.

DontdoitDoris · 07/04/2019 14:32

Danish or Croissants with berries for Breakfast.
Salad/Olives/ cheese/sourdough for lunch

Something already made from the freezer for Dinner, shepherds pie, casserole, curry.

I dont do Sunday Lunch anymore as it takes up the whole day and Sunday evenings are for relaxing not clearing up.

RuthW · 07/04/2019 14:33

Sunday dinner at 1pm Christmas day and Easter Sunday only.

Megan2018 · 07/04/2019 14:34

We always have a Sunday roast at lunchtime when we have one 1-2pm usually. DH cooks it.
I spend weekend mornings horse riding so it’s lovely to come home to.
We usually only have them autumn/winter though sadly although I’d happily eat it all year!
Roast potatoes, roast parsnips, cauliflower cheese, peas, broccoli, roast carrots are the norm. Yorkshires with everything. Stuffing with chicken.
We mainly have chicken (corn fed, free range) or beef.

DoubtOfTheOrdinary · 07/04/2019 14:34

@TurnOffTheTv Your Sunday sounds like the stuff of dreams 😍 I've eaten cereal, fruit pastilles and a tomato sandwich today, watered my plants, and faffed about online. Definitely going to plan a Sunday like yours next week!

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 07/04/2019 14:34

We hardly ever have a roast! If we do then it's a vegan roast; roast potatoes, kale, carrots and seitan with gravy for the protein bit Grin we've had it for Christmas, it's that good....

CherryPavlova · 07/04/2019 14:36

Early roast today as daughter and fiancé are here - but now popped out to speak to the rector. It was popped in before we went to Mass. Neighbours joined us.
Chicken and vegetarian stuffing, Hassleback squash with orange and bay, roasted potatoes, roasted carrots, cauliflower cheese and crispy kale with bread sauce. Then cherry sponge with vanilla ice cream.
We’ll have toast or soup later after they’ve gone home.
We’d usual have a later Sunday lunch but wouldn’t usually cook a roast for just the two of us. We’d go out.

Justtrying · 07/04/2019 14:36

I grew up with full roast at 1pm followed by tea, with cake on our knees watching telly about 5.30.

But in our house, we eat our dinner in the evening so if I'm not working on a Sunday it will be a roast between 6 and seven. Any later is too late for DD, age 8, who normally has dinner about 5.30. For me a roast is still meat or chicken, roast potatoes and 3 veg. Perhaps roast parsnips unless its lamb, always carrots for DD, mashed carrot and Swede for me and dh then another veg or two. If it's beef or pork Yorkshire puddings. Stuffing with chicken and pork. Additional new potatoes with lamb, plus appropriate condiments.
Always too full for pudding.

jcq17 · 07/04/2019 14:37

We have a roast about once a month if that!
It is served at 5.30 and followed by pudding on the sofa! I would have just one other meal that day.

mummyofdaughters · 07/04/2019 14:37

9 Sundays out of 10 we'll have a roast - either chicken, beef, or pork, with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, cauliflower cheese, and steamed veg (broccoli and carrot usually), plus gravy, followed by a cake or apple crumble with cream. Usually around 5pm so we can eat it with our toddler.

If still hungry late in the evening then it's a sandwich and some crisps.

MadMillie · 07/04/2019 14:38

I couldn't get past someone serving a dinner st 10.45pm, what time did
he start cooking it?

I'd have fed myself, had my jammies on and been in bed by then 😂😂

My lovely friend is staying this weekend and she wants to cook tonight. My stomach is rumbling at the delicious aroma from the kitchen. She cooks THE BEST Indian food.

jcq17 · 07/04/2019 14:38

Oh and my version would be beef or chicken, got to have cauliflower and Broccoli cheese, parsnips roast taters, and 2 maybe 3 veg!

Samind · 07/04/2019 14:40

We don't always have a roast either. When I was growing up, we did. Tbh as long as I've food to hand I don't mind haha

PS I would of cried having to wait til 10.45pm and probably ordered a takeaway by then 😂😂

TurnOffTheTv · 07/04/2019 14:42

@DoubtOfTheOrdinary

We all make sure that everything is done on a Saturday (homework/uniforms/food ordering/etc) then we can all just fully chill out on a Sunday.
Red wine gets opened at 3, blankets out, maybe the kids (they’re a little bit older) have bubble baths, we put a movie in, maybe play it game.
It’s our day just to relax and get our heads screwed on for the week ahead!

Samind · 07/04/2019 14:45

Agreed @turnoffthetv.

I'm drooling over your Sunday 😂😂
