Hello
I have an appointment with my GP on Wednesday as a first step to getting a vasectomy - can anyone tell me what happens next? Would like to know more about the whole process (as well as the procedure itself). Thanks!

If it's the same as my DH, you'll be given some information, dr will discuss why you want it. Then you'll be invited for a second appt to check you understand it all & still want to go ahead. They'd might ask you to bring your DP with you to check they understand everything about the op etc.
Then a few weeks later you'll go in to the clinic, you'll need to have shaved prior (plus no sex for a few days before); then they'll give you a local anaesthetic, perform the op & send you off with info on how to luck after the wound. You'll be advised not to drive or work for at least a week, & to take paracetamol for the pain.
Then a few months later you'll need to provide a sample to check to see if it has worked.

DH got asked questions about why and making sure he definitely wanted it by his GP.
He had a referral to a local vasectomy clinic who were supposed to see him before the op but they didn't bother.
The operation was the non-scalpel method, so smaller incision, under local anaesthetic.
He was sore that evening once the anaesthetic wore off. He was uncomfortable for a few days but he has a desk job so was back at work the next day.
Showers were allowed after 24 hrs, bath after 48. He could do normal sport after a week. We also had sex after a week.
I think it's 12 weeks AND 30 ejaculations before he can send a sperm sample to be tested.

Not to drive or work for a week!? Someone was kidding you on there!

DH went to the GP who referred him to the clinic. He waited around six weeks from referral to procedure. No mention not to have sex in the days beforehand and no need to shave either. He had a local then they cut a section out of each tube and cauterised the ends ("smelled like the world's worst barbecue"). He was given a support cup to wear for around a week afterwards and advised to wear close fitting underwear for comfort, no heavy lifting for around a week either - the doctor said nothing heavier than toddler DS. He was told he only had to take it easy for the first 24hrs and could go back to work the following day with paracetamol/ibuprofen for any discomfort. He had to put a sample in four weeks after the op then a second sample two weeks after that, once there were two clear samples in a row then it was considered to have worked. Both of his were clear.
