Are the Gusto meals worth a try?

If so, which meals do you recommend? We are a family of 2 adults and an 11 year old. Will we need to order for family of 4 or would we manage with ordering for 2 people. Thanks.

I haven’t had them for a little while but I’ve always rated them (and found them to be better than Hello Fresh). The menus change weekly but I’m not sure on what rotation they are on. They are surprisingly tasty and generous portions. I’ve been toying with going back to them once or twice a month as I don’t find them bad value for money!

Mrscog · 06/04/2019 21:38

Yes they’re bloody delish! I think you’ll need a 4 person box, but at least you’ll have a spare portion for lunch the next day!

Rainbowsandrascals · 06/04/2019 21:47

Useful to know Mrscog - thanks.

Utterly BRILLIANT and have enabled me to make food that people DONT spit out :)
We have found that a box for two people usually feeds three (sometimes I cook an extra vegetable, or a bit more rice)

Good variety, some weeks we treat ourselves to the ‘upgrade’ meals that are like a restaurant dinner.

The ONLY bad one we have had was a lasagne..but probably my fault.

NewAndImprovedNorks · 06/04/2019 22:11

Oooh, hello there

nikkylou · 06/04/2019 22:45

We tried it for one week, got the first box half price.
We found it's a neat portion for 2, we'd really struggle to get a third plate out of it.
We didn't rate it tbh.
It was nice to not have to think about what to cook. But some of it was just a bit of a faff and an "easy" meal my partner really struggled...it was a pork chilli with tortilla chips. He found the chilli okay, but tortilla chips...I think it failed to consider that for some, the biggest difficulty in cooking is ttiming, so tortilla chips that burn in 10 seconds flat aren't the best pairing with a easy meal.
I also found it very plastic heavy as everything is portioned. You don't get a tub of puree for all the dishes you've ordered...you get 5 tubs of 1tbsp etc.
We didn't find it particularly good value. It was fine for the half price trial, totally great at £5 per meal, but at £10 a meal, I felt it would be a waste.

donajimena · 06/04/2019 23:00

My 13 year old son suggested that I might find these useful Hmm
The thing that put me off was having to cook the dishes before the ingredients went off and if we are busy or our plans change we often change our meal plans.
I eventually settled on simply cook which is just the spices. Its actually revolutionised my repertoire AND cut my food bill. It works out 2.50 per dish plus ingredients but the ingredients usually come to around 4 pounds extra. Thats to feed 4.
The benefit is that they don't spoil quickly. You can get a trial kit for 3 pounds.

TreacherousPissFlap · 06/04/2019 23:09

I think it depends on your appetites. We used them for ages when DS was younger, DH is not a big eater, I'm average and so was DS. We often padded meals out with extra salad or a fresh baguette etc.
DS is now a lanky teen and we fall firmly into the three meals category which Gousto don't cater for- we can't pad two meals out enough and for the price four meals isn't good value for money.
We loved the menus and if we had the option for three meals we would definitely use them again Smile

FurryBlankets · 06/04/2019 23:20

We’ve been having them for more than 2 years now and absolutely love them. The currys are amazing and I can never believe you can make something so delicious at home. We too have an 11 year old and the only problem is that they don’t do boxes for 3 people, so we try to pad out with extra rice etc. Dh loves cooking them which is an additional bonus

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 06/04/2019 23:36

I love Guosto. I'm autistic and find supermarkets massively overwhelming my default is either i dont need any thing or i'll my favorite 4 foods to out as quick as possiable. .

Now i get 4 meals for 2 (so dinner one day lunch the next as theres only one of me) for £34. Its good quality, easy to cook, even after work its not hours of cooking.I take the left overs to work for lunch the next day
I always give my stepdad who is a very very good cook (went to catering college) the receipe cards, then he buys the ingenditants. Resently however he was at mine and he actually tried one of tje resceipes from what tjey send out. And actually we did get three servings out of a meal designed for two. He raves about them now. The home economics of them are very simple but the flavour and meals are excellent.

Its a life saver for me. I can't drive public transport is hard to access the supermarkets and even if i could they would freak me out. With gousto i know my food for the week is delivered to my door i know what i'm getting at it will be there.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 06/04/2019 23:42

Oh favourites

Mine are the prawn chill lauguine, kedgree, mac and cheese,

My step dad loves the haddoxk receipes

Thanks everyone. Really good advice. I will start with a box for 2 people and will see how it goes. 😁

You need a box for 4, trust me on this one OP!

Coffeetablejunk · 07/04/2019 08:36

Just booked simply cook on the back of this thread, we are also a family of three but their boxes are 2-3 and we add own ingredients so should be fine portion wise.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 07/04/2019 08:41

Love Gousto!
We have a box every other week, and cook from their recipe cards with our own ingredients the rest of the time.
Try a 2 person box to start with, a lot of their meals are rice or pasta based so you can pad them out. Or just do a green side salad

BiscuitDrama · 07/04/2019 08:44

We did one and found it didn’t suit us. The meals were fine but took a while to prepare.
They were good for people who don’t want to meal plan and shop and stock up on slightly more obscure ingredients.
I’m fine at those bits, just needed some short cuts to the actual prep. I was hoping for some of the ingredients to be ready chopped, which they aren’t.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 07/04/2019 08:47

Fave recipes?
I was disappointed in the original lasagne but they've done a new recipe and it's ace.
All the curries are good.
We rarely choose "English" recipes, it's middle Eastern or Asian most weeks.
They seem very keen on burger type things often chicken or pulled pork but I'm not keen. They also offer a pizza recipe every week (40 recipes to choose from) but I feel £5 is dear for do it yourself pizza.

RainbowFox · 07/04/2019 10:29

I've just ordered my first box! There is only me and toddler DS so gone for the 2 person box, but wonder if sometimes it might be worth doing a 4 person box with recipes you can freeze as the price per portion is cheaper.

Being a solo mum it's hard to find the energy and time to meal plan and prep decent meals every week, I'm not creative or the best cook so hoping this will help massively and not be too much extra on food budget.

FurryBlankets · 07/04/2019 10:59

Breakfast we are exactly the same. Rarely have the traditional English recipes. We don’t have the burgers or meatballs. It’s great for introducing you to new flavours and like others we use the recipe cards at other times.

Hope you all enjoy them!

JustRestingForNow · 07/04/2019 11:01

This sounds great! I am inspired by this thread.

There's £9 via Quidco AND ALSO 50% off first box and 30% off other 3!

Thank you for the heads up!

FurryBlankets · 07/04/2019 11:05

And another referral code for 50% off first box and 30% off second

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 07/04/2019 11:10

@FurryBlankets We cook Gousto recipes (with or without our own bought ingredients) about 90% of the time now. Things I never tried are now firm faves (Fish curry!)
I enjoy the prep and DH and I mostly work together making the meal. AND he will also decide on what to cook and buy it all on a lot of the box free days.

RainbowFox · 07/04/2019 11:41

FFS I forgot to check Quidco 🤦🏼‍♀️

willowmelangell · 07/04/2019 19:14

You asked what meals...Southern Fried Chicken Burger, Fries & Garlic Mayo. Huge hit here. An eye opener.
Moroccan Chicken with Lemony Couscous. I followed the recipe the first time, and after that tweaked it to our taste buds. Often.
Glamorgan Patties. OMG meat free loveliness.
The single biggest hit in our house, Taiwanese Slow-Braised Pork Belly. We eat this at least twice a week. Yum Yum.
Korean Pork Patties, a new twist.
Paprika Pork Burger, Apple salad & wedges.. wonderful!
For me, I follow the exact recipe the first time, and after tweak it to our taste buds using a regular online shop with a supermarket. I will just say, at first I thought the portions were small, but over time I have seen that I have previously over filled the plate.
