A nagging cough that will not go away...

I have had an annoying cough for about three weeks or so now. It feels like an irritation in my throat. I am mid 40s and know it’s unlikely to be lung cancer or such, but a small part of me is worrying... the only thing I can think of is that it’s an allergic reaction to pollen in the air, as I have had a bit of that in previous years. Anyone else?

Read the 1st line from this NHS page about coughs and make a GP appointment.

Same! I've been coughing for about 7-8 weeks now. I've been told it's viral bronchitis and can last up to 90 days...

I had this and saw my GP after a couple of weeks. She said it was likely that a mild chest infection I'd had had irritated my bronchi, which was making me cough, which was irritating my bronchi…and so on. She prescribed a salbutamol inhaler which eased it almost immediately, and a week on, the cough has almost gone - so it probably worth making an appointment!

My husband has this! Had it for about 2 months now I guess?
It's driving me mad! Praying it goes soon.

Hi OP; I’m a respiratory physician and it could well be a viral cough like previous PP, but you may benefit from an inhaler so it’s definitely worth popping to your GP. They can also sound you out for anything more serious that could do with an x-ray. Good luck!

Justmuddling - I know, I probably should and will soon - it’s just that I always feel like I am wasting their time...

Bianca - that’s interesting - did you have any other symptoms? I hope you feel better soon.

Have just seen the other responses - thank you! I will stop worrying and see my GP to get an inhaler or something.

I had an irritating cough that wouldn't go.
Turned out it was caused by post nasal drip persisting after a bad cold. I was recommended to try a decongestants to dry the drip up and the cough went.
