Anyone else had a catastrophic loss of energy in their late 40s?

I feel like my lower half is encased in concrete today. I am absolutely & utterly exhausted. Is it a meno thing? I had a hysterectomy years ago (but kept ovaries) so I've no idea where I am in my progression. No amount of rest alleviates the feeling. I feel like I could lie down forever. I don't want to be like this. I want my bloody energy back. Anyone else?

You have, of course, been tested for anaemia?

marvellousnightforamooncup · 06/04/2019 17:39

Get a blood test. Check for anaemia, vitamin deficiencies or thyroid issues.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 06/04/2019 17:40

Any other symptoms, have you lost weight? Don't ignore this.

No I haven't lost weight. I've put on 2 stone over the last year Blush It's very unlike me, I've been slim all my life until now. Now I have a massive belly.

My iron is probably low now you mention it.

Have you been tested for underactive thyroid? I was diagnosed mid 40s, I was so tired, everything was a supreme effort, I felt like I was wading through concrete. Also, as other have stated, find out it you are suffering from a vitamin deficiency.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 06/04/2019 17:47

I I’d ask the GP for an MOT . I had one of those not long ago which picked up prediabetes. I’ve had to change my diet massively but once I did this my energy levels picked up.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 06/04/2019 17:47

and yes weight gain is a factor with hypothyroidism.

SplinterSplit · 06/04/2019 17:51

My thyroid tests came back as 'just under' ideal but my gp said it was normal & wasn't prepared to do anything about it.

What are you eating now Delores?

Yes. Am 48.

Sat down about an hour ago, because I was dropping. Get to about 4pm and I could sleep.

Only other time in my life I felt like this was when I was pg with DC1 (def not PG).

I’m pretty sure it’s weight and hormones. Joints are hurting too.

Was doing really well losing weight and started to feel a lot brighter.

I’m just too tired to apply myself to it now.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 06/04/2019 18:09

My thyroid tests came back "just under ideal" Hmm I seem to remember when I was first tested, I'm going back a while, I was considered borderline, a similar test with another doctor soon after that time confirmed I was suffering from hypothyroidism. I wouldn't rule that out an under active thyroid OP. This condition often kicks in the time of the menopause and symptoms are similar.

LividLaughLove · 06/04/2019 18:21

Sounds a lot like thyroid issues. The NHS have a ridiculous range of "normal". Your TSH should ideally be below about 2.5.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 06/04/2019 18:25

I did and I thought old age had just take n me over. So I thought I need to look after myself better, stopped drinking, made sure I walked 10,500 steps every day, too essential fish oil supplements and most importantly ate very very healthy. Not angelic but no processed crap.

Apart from achy joints in a morning I feel like a teenager. Personally I think the food alone made the difference to me.

A friend found HRT worked for her but she had other symptoms too.

Missmarplesknitting · 06/04/2019 18:25

Could also be vitamin D deficiency. Get those blood tests.

I was exhausted constantly with it.

Yogagirl123 · 06/04/2019 18:25

See GP, again OP. Do you have any other symptoms?

madcatladyforever · 06/04/2019 18:26

Yes OP, it turned out I had vitamin D, vitamin B12 and iron deficiency. I was on prescription strength supplements for 6 months before I felt any better. This happened several times and now I'm on medication for life.
All of this started with the menopause and as you said you had a hysterectomy so it might possibly connected with hormonal failure which often triggers deficiencies.
The peri menopause also makes you feel exhausted, I remember feeling that if I didn't lie down I'd die.
Time for a visit to your GP I think.

Ivegotthree · 06/04/2019 18:51

I bet you it's anaemia. I had the same, went to GP, bloods ok.

Eventually went to see someone else, more bloods done, and it was borderline anaemia. I got the coil, periods nearly vanished, and my energy has returned.

Wish I'd done it ages ago.

Home77 · 06/04/2019 18:57

Dis you know after surgery we get internal scar tissue, adhesions? I have had lots and I too can feel like it is concrete. It can be painful.

Ciasteczka · 06/04/2019 19:03

I am not in my forties yet but have just spent a week wondering why I'm so tired before realising that it's probably my antihistamines. Just a thought I'd you're a fellow hayfever sufferer.

StillMedusa · 06/04/2019 19:05

Snap... went for a blood test and I'm Vit D deficient and have been put on tablets. I'm really hoping I will feel like a new woman soon!

Do go and get some bloods done!

christinarossetti19 · 06/04/2019 19:11

What you've described are symptoms of 'just under' ideal thyroid levels.

The general advice is to consider treatment when the person is experiencing symptoms, which you clearly are.

Your doctor should also check your vitamin D and iron levels.

FermatsTheorem · 06/04/2019 19:13

Perimenopause? I had a nightmare. Exhausted, but couldn't sleep (not just hot sweats, also whizzy couldn't settle to sleep thought patterns), weight gain (just complete loss of will power - I craved junk food because of lack of sleep, and couldn't "say no" because my will power for everything - including motivation at work - had just gone out the window). HRT was a complete game changer for me. Like going back to normal after wandering around in a thick fog while wading through treacle.

Palominoo · 06/04/2019 19:15

I was in my 40s and started taking a magnesium supplement which greatly reduces unexplained tiredness.

Asta19 · 06/04/2019 19:24

This is me. I’m 49 and have spent the whole day in bed napping off and on. I’ve also put on a couple of stone in the past year or so, mainly on my stomach. I was also slim all my life until then. I work from home and often end up going for a lunchtime nap. I just ache and feel tired all of the time. I know I need to get to the GP and get checked out but even that feels a big effort!

perfectpanda · 06/04/2019 19:29

I've lost all my energy as i approach 47..and can you imagine chasing after a toddler? I had a baby mid 40s. I'm knackered.
