Mr Penguin or Claude books (both by Alex T Smith). They are chapter books with pictures.

Following a recommendation on here I can say that the runaway dinner by allan alberg is the best childrens book ever. Its completely bonkers so perfect for a 5 year old.

The Seriously Silly Stories by Laurence Anholt (silly versions of fairytales).

Most books by Road Dahl.

DS also loves the Usborne History Of... books. His favourites are Planes, Cars and Chocolate.

Owner of 3 boys and they all loved Mr Men and Little Miss books.
Also all Julia Donaldson.

Any Julia Donaldson, especially the Ugly Five. That one makes me chuckle.

The Book With No Pictures is incredibly popular with my 5yo DC's whole class.

There can be quite a range of reading abilities at 5 though so it might be worth checking with parents if this is not your DS.
