Who are you betting on this year?

Twotome · 06/04/2019 15:24

No one like a flutter?

Doggydoggydoggy · 06/04/2019 15:44

I would like to think that anyone betting on the national, or any horse or dog race for that matter simply doesn’t know enough about them/is naive enough to believe the lies and therefore doesn’t realise why it is a disgusting thing to do.

Fazackerley · 06/04/2019 15:46

I don't bet but I'll watch the race. I'm conflicted about racing as I know for an absolute fact that the horses that have got this far genuinely love racing, but I hate it if they get hurt.

Fazackerley · 06/04/2019 15:47

I'm not naive, I worked in a racing yard as a kid and have friends now who train and race.

Carpetburns · 06/04/2019 15:50

Went for Tea for Two. Tiger Roll seemed too obvious

Handbag101 · 06/04/2019 15:52

Rock the Kasbah for me.

Twotome · 06/04/2019 15:55

I’ve gone for Walk in the Mill and Up for Review.

sunshineandshowers21 · 06/04/2019 15:59

i’m a big johnny cash fan so have gone for folsom blue. i’ve also had outlander as every year i have a horse at 100-1 because i won on a 100-1 a few years ago.

lisamac28 · 06/04/2019 16:05

Ballyoptic for me.

ClashCityRocker · 06/04/2019 16:07

Rock The Kasbah (obviously!), walk in the mill and Vintage Clouds all each way.

ClashCityRocker · 06/04/2019 16:09

Would love to see the Tiger do it back to back though.

weaselwords · 06/04/2019 16:09

Rock the Kasbah, but not betting.

I’m conflicted about this race. I don’t usually watch it, but will this year and I’m not sure what’s changed.

noitsachicken · 06/04/2019 16:09

Two horses dead yesterday

LittleMissHappy19 · 06/04/2019 16:13

Bless the wings gone each way..DH Outlander on the nose Shock

EnlightenedOwl · 06/04/2019 16:14

Obvs would like the Tiger to win he had a great spin at Cheltenham. Backed Anibale fly and joe farrell and jury duty

Frouby · 06/04/2019 16:16

I have tea for two and the other one with a female jock on as each way bets. And also gone each way on Joe Farrel who has been tipped by a couple of reputable, inform tipsters.

I also do matched betting and have a long list of horses I want to come 5th.

For those who are querying the national and horse racing and welfare in general I am a horse owner (or pony owner anyway) and have been for 25 years. I have been on racing yards in the past and hate as much as anyone when something is injured or killed on the track.

However. These animals are treated like royalty. They are humanely destroyed in minutes if the worse happens on track. And are loved by their lads and lasses, owners, trainers and jockeys.

The main welfare issue in racing isnt what happens on the track it's what happens after they have retired. My pony could down in the field after the last check and not be found til 8am, it doesn't happen in racing.

If I could be any animal on reincarnation I would be a racehorse, preferably a successful stallion as I would run around a bit, be adored a lot then shag my way to a nice happy retirement. And if I was a bit shit as a racehorse I would rather be pts on the track than sold at auction to Tracey who has always wanted her own and bought me at a sale for £500 because I was pretty, but actually has neither the knowledge or the money to keep a blood horse.

Cassimin · 06/04/2019 16:20

I always have a bet on the national. I used to manage betting shops and it is the best day of the year, fabulous atmosphere. My older children attend the meeting usually on ladies day and love it.
It’s very sad that some horses are injured and need to be killed and that doesn’t sit right with me, could they not be treated and put out to grass?
However these horses are treated better in their lives than most who live a lot longer could ever be treated.
I’m doing outlander and go conquer.

pansydansy · 06/04/2019 16:24

Jury duty. Because I was reading a thread on here yesterday about it lol

Doggydoggydoggy · 06/04/2019 16:26

However. These animals are treated like royalty. They are humanely destroyed in minutes if the worse happens on track. And are loved by their lads and lasses, owners, trainers and jockeys

Indeed, because they bring in huge amounts of money.

It’s not for the love of the horse...

And when they can’t make money anymore they are either destroyed or sent to auction or (rarely) go to a nice home where they are retrained in another discipline.

Huge amounts of mumsnetters have retired greys and I would therefore assume are aware of the cruelty involved in the racing industry but horses seem ignored. I don’t understand why.

I used to be very horsey.
As I’ve got older my opinion has changed completely.

The way humanity treats horses disgusts me.

Fazackerley · 06/04/2019 16:27

I have some sympathy for your views doggy but when you say things like It’s not for the love of the horse... I lose any respect for them as not only is that completely untrue it's offensive.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 06/04/2019 16:28

Would absolutely love to see the mighty Tiger Roll win again (used to work with Gordy Elliot many years ago) but I’ve gone for Joe Farrell and Lake View Lad each way. DH has Ultragold in the sweepstake.

Fazackerley · 06/04/2019 16:29

It also proves that you have zero experience with racehorses

SansasSnatch · 06/04/2019 16:29

We chose

Tea for two
Atoi phil
Red beard
Anabelle something

😂

Doggydoggydoggy · 06/04/2019 16:30

Can only base my views on what I’ve seen.

As I say, I used to be very horsey.

I’m quite sure SOME people in the racing industry absolutely adore their horses but overall I take a dim view.

To be honest, I judge absolutely any activity that centres on animals with suspicion, especially those where money is involved.

Fazackerley · 06/04/2019 16:32

Yes, and as I say, I have some sympathy with the view that making money from animals is not quite morally right somehow.

But, you just wouldn't work in a racing yard if you didn't love horses! The grooms and jockeys sure as hell don't do it for the money!
