Lego Discovery Centre Birmingham

Have posted this in Local but got no replies...

We're visiting family near Birmingham for a few days over Easter. Is the Lego Discovery Centre worth a visit? I have two DC, 9 and 6. It seems quite pricey and I can't tell from the website whether it's going to be decent value for money, or whether we'll get round it all in an hour.

We've been to the Sealife centre before and loved it, as well as Think Tank and the West Mids Safari Park.

If you have any other suggestions for days out, that would be great.

Thanks!

It's ok. Not that big and we did everything there was to do within 2 hours really. My DSs are a couple of years older than yours and they enjoyed it so I think younger ones would really like it.

But for what it is, it's expensive so I'd only go if you have a voucher!!!

Have you been to Umberslade Farm? That's good and there's a new adventure bit with outdoor activities that my boys enjoyed.

My DS is Lego mad so we spent about 3 hrs doing the workshops and activities.

SeaLife on the other hand was done in 30 mins and seemed just like a money making exercise rather than anything to do with conservation or education.

I took 2 7 year olds and a 4 year old. They enjoyed it. We were there about 3 hours, but a lot of it is just building with Lego, which they could do at home. There is a small soft play bit, a 4D cinema, 2 small rides and the bit where they had created models of Birmingham landmarks out of Lego. We had a voucher (I think it was 40% off each person), which made it not too unreasonable, but full price would definitely not be worth it.
My other suggestion would be the Botanical Gardens has life-sized animatronic Ice Age creatures over Easter. We went a couple of years ago when they had animatronic dinosaurs and it was great. I assume it is the same company again. You are risking the weather though. It poured when we went to see the dinosaurs and people who didn't have a decent waterproof were soaked through. (thanks by the way, your post reminded me that I must book our tickets to see this).

HoHoHolyCow · 06/04/2019 13:03

Thanks for all the info!

We have a MAX card so get 52% off entry.

I like the sound of the animatronic creatures - thanks for that!

Still a bit undecided about Lego centre. Think we'll probably give it a miss though unless weather forecast looks terrible and we need to be inside!

We went last weekend and my two who are 2 and 8 enjoyed it, it is good for a few hours! We have Merlin passes so don’t pay to get in and I don’t think I would pay asking price! If you don’t mind travelling out of Birmingham a bit there is Dudley zoo, Black Country museum and Cadbury world which are all better!

HoHoHolyCow · 06/04/2019 13:57

Thanks!

We've been to the Museum and DS1 has given up chocolate for Lent so I thought Cadbury's World might be a but mean! (we are going next weekend so he'll still be chocolate-free)

Will check out the zoo. We went to London zoo last year which was good, although all the animals seemed to be hiding or asleep!

Drayton manor isn’t too far away if you like theme parks, I’m not sure on the Birmingham side of things as I am in the Black Country, but there is also hoo farm, the Dudley canals, the snow dome, ash end farm and Alton towers isn’t too far away either.

ScissorBow · 06/04/2019 14:42

Lego Discovery is OK for a few hours but definitely not worth full price. I'd say there's better things to do round Birmingham such as some of the other suggestions

BikeRunSki · 06/04/2019 14:46

The Lego Discovery Centre in Manchester is an hour’s worth of activity max, and v pricey.

Have you been to The Black Country Museum?

HoHoHolyCow · 06/04/2019 17:24

We didn't love the Black Country Museum. One of the men (not sure if staff or volunteer) was demonstrating how to whittle wood. All the while he gave a quiet running commentary about how much he hated someone and wanted them to die of cancer! It was really unnerving! We have never been back Confused

Oh dear! I loved it!

HoHoHolyCow · 06/04/2019 17:29

I'm sure it was just a one-off bad experience. We live quite close to another Living Museum which we go to loads and really enjoy! Maybe we should give it another chance :)

When you say near Birmingham, which side? If you're to the East, Drayton Manor, Twycross Zoo and the Tamworth Snowdome are all really good fun. (I live near Tamworth.)
