If you're wanting to move house, are you waiting to see what happens with (bleurgh!) Brexit? Or just carrying on regardless?

Hi,

Just that really.

Had our house on the market last year, but the market was shocking and we had a couple of potentials retract offers because of government instability.

We're off the market now, just whilst we think about what we want to do. If Brexit was to be postponed until next year, I think we'd put it on this spring, but if the deal goes through this summer or indeed, no deal, then am I wrong in thinking there's no point in bothering to re market this year?

We don't want to keep going on, coming off.....going on, because it doesn't look good. People might wonder what's wrong with the house, understandably!

So if you're moving, have moved recently or have decided to wait and see, what are your reasons and experiences?

Thanks

Personally, while some houses are selling I think the market is pretty stagnant at the moment. I’m no estate agent but we are south east and there are quite a few properties on the market and very little movement. I would wait until there’s a bit more certainty over brexit.

EsmesRedPetticoat · 06/04/2019 11:47

We are waiting for now. We are getting married in July so that is taking up all our energy anyway but the uncertainty is putting us off anyway. We don’t want to move and then see interest rates go up and leave us with a mortgage we can’t pay.

pinegreen · 06/04/2019 19:01

We are waiting. We planned to put our flat on the market this spring but there was no point. We’ll sell next spring instead. Irritatingly my MP is Corbyn who I hold equally culpable for this mess given his appalling efforts pre Referendum. I am fed up to the back teeth of this country having no functioning government whilst May et al squabble and Corbyn flaps ineffectually in his allotment.

LBOCS2 · 06/04/2019 19:20

The market is very stagnant around here too.

We're buying. We are lucky in that we don't need to sell to buy our onward purchase, so we're not going through the stress of that, which I think is the tricky bit at the moment. We're hoping to complete 1st June (although that's already been pushed back 2 months by our vendor 🙄)

gubbsywubbsy · 06/04/2019 19:30

We are extending with savings and we will move later if there isn't a crash . I wouldn't make a £200k odd leap now ( our next jump up the ladder )

Collectingcpd · 06/04/2019 19:32

We are moving. Had a few offered on our house, which we’ve declined. We don’t need to sell to move. Market still full steam where we are moving to.

HeyThoughIWalk · 06/04/2019 19:46

We're waiting. Can't see Brexit (or continued uncertainty) pushing prices up, and since we're not selling, just buying, we might as well wait. We've been in negative equity before, and don't want to do it again.

There doesn't seem to much on the market round here at the moment anyway. I have a search set up on a local property site, and it notifies me of any houses that come onto the market and meet my criteria. 18 months ago I was getting 4/5 a week. Now (even if I increase the price range) I'm getting about 1 a month. We've viewed a few, and then seen them on the site more recently with the price reduced.

Local estate agents say prices are still going up slightly, but I'm not seeing it in the bracket we're looking at.

Weirdly the housing market where I live is having something of a boom at the moment. However considering that house prices haven’t budged here since 2009 until the last 6 months it’s not exactly indicative of anything.

Cosmoplease · 07/04/2019 12:28

Thanks for the replies.

Interesting to hear that there are booms anywhere!

There are so many reasons I want to move, but I just don't think it's a sensible idea.

We're waiting. We desperately need to move and would have to sell. Nothing is moving around here despite it formerly being a real hotbed of activity.

Cosmoplease · 09/04/2019 13:55

Rockbird, but how long will you wait?

OP posts:
Rockbird · 09/04/2019 17:12

Till I see some movement in the market around us. In the meantime we're starting to declutter etc but I don't see much point in putting ours on the market when similar ones, which used to be snapped up in days, are languishing.

MrsPatmore · 09/04/2019 17:22

We have just exchanged and it took a while to sell. We took a 6% reduction on ours and negotiated the same for our onward purchase. We are in our new house for the long term though and it meets our long term needs so we're hoping to ride out any market troughs. I think a slowing down/reduction is coming so if you have to move then perhaps look at a property you can add value to. We also took out a 5 year fix and will be overpaying in that time as at the end of the period interest rates are likely to be higher than they are now. I'm also looking at a career move to increase our income.

Short advice would be to stay put if you don't need to move but think about if there is a recession for an extended time you might get stuck in a property that doesn't meet your needs.

scarfattack · 09/04/2019 17:44

Carrying on regardless. We need to move, people still need to move and life goes on so figured whilst over all there may be less/more buying selling depending on how people react, it makes no difference to our circumstances and thus for others too. Brexit, believe it or not is actually not on my mind the whole time!
I found it a bit slow at the start and we sold fast but couldn't find anywhere. Took 5 months for a suitable house to come up and our budget was reasonable and area fairly large. Think there are people who are waiting but there are also people who are trying to be sold and moved before the actual exit.

SimonJT · 09/04/2019 18:01

The housing market is a little slow here, the flat I’m buying is lovely and it has been on the market since January.

Cosmoplease · 10/04/2019 14:57

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm almost hoping brexit is delayed until next year. Maybe then the market would have a bit of a flurry, while buyers and sellers decide to get their skates on.

I'm terrified of getting stuck here. We're thinking about having another baby, we can't do that where we are. I'm honestly so unhappy here. I want to live somewhere with some soul and sense of community.
